One Foot Down has put up yet another excellent article, this one dissecting Notre Dame's perceived weak schedule so far in 2010. Basically puts the pundits in their place, comparing the SOS of several programs. Even over recent history it bears out:

And just in case you were wondering, in that piece I was comparing Notre Dame’s schedule with Big Ten teams and the average yearly strength of schedule since 1997 looked like this for each program:

Notre Dame 20.6
Michigan 28.1
Ohio State 30.8
Iowa 32.8
Michigan State 35.4
Penn State 35.6
Purdue 38.66
Illinois 40.1
Northwestern 40.1
Minnesota 42.8
Indiana 44.8
Wisconsin 46.2

Nice little article to whip out since I work with a number of OSU fans...

I love this stuff...great post...tired of the dumbasses whining about NDs schedule as if being in a conference means a tougher schedule...Bone Head Mouth Breathers...

Heck, only one team on our entire schedule has a losing record, and they just gave Florida State all they could handle. The word I've heard all along was that ND had one of, if not THE, strongest schedules for our first six games.

Every year we have a decent schedule. We dont play schools like Beaver State, Alaska A&M, Cupcake Univ, and Eastern Kentucky Coal Mining A&M. We consistently play decent teams. It is always hard to predict who is going to be tough any given year. Some years Pitt and Boston College are tough and ranked. I remember when USC wasn't all that great and we used to blow them out every year. The service schools always put up a good fight, and then there are always the likes of schools like Michigan, MSU, Purdue and others. The way it looks right now, our 2012 schedule looks formidable, but perhaps one of these programs will have a down year so you never know how it will all play out. It is nice to see articles like this that takes a look at SOS and points out that we never really have a cupcake SOS and that we are always playing solid teams, or teams that have the ability to catch us if we let our guard down. I like the fact that we play competitve football against quality teams. Winning doesn't really mean all that much if you blowout a small Div. II college.

At OFD we were saying this year's schedule is tough in a very non-glamorous way...I think I pointed that out somewhere in there.

I was thinking, this year's SoS would look similar to last years and be somewhere in the ~30 range. For reasons discussed in that piece it is higher right now and could even get into the top 10 by years end.

Western Michigan might not win 4 games this year, but I think they will. That would probably mean ND won't play anyone with 8 losses...that's pretty incredible.
