Dropping The (F)bombs

I’ve been to a few practices this spring but it wasn’t until Wednesday that I really tried to watch the linebackers and focus in on what Jon Tenuta was doing with his unit.

I didn’t think much of it as I wandered over, but boy, was I in for an earful when I arrived.

I know football isn’t for small ears and foul language is part of the landscape, but holy &@#% does Tenuta have a lively mouth.

In the short time I watched, Notre Dame’s new defensive coach launched at least 15 f-bombs. Walk-on or letterman, nobody was safe. Interestingly, all were delivered during the 20 minutes visitors and cameras were allowed into practice.

Not to sound like a prude, but it seemed over the top for a coach to filter nothing when “teaching” his players. How long will it take for that coaching style to start growing mold, especially at a Christian-based university? It was slightly disconcerting because I initially found it disrespectful to the guys and contradictory to the ND mission statement....

Seems to me that if these young men weren't fortunate enough to be gifted and be playing at ND, they could very possibly be dodging bullets in Iraq or Afghanistan. Better to dodge F-bombs than bullets.

The language doesn't bother me in the least.

F-bolt, I can tell you from experience that the F-bomb is not looked on as near as bad by most priests as saying "G_d Damn". The first is seen as improper and the latter is seen as blasphemy(I have a brother-in-law who is a priest).
Profanity is very common in coaching in all sports and at most levels. As a coaching tool, it is very useful as an "attention-getter"! Think back to your youth and the old man was cussing you out, I would bet you were definitely paying attention to what he was saying (I know I was!). It may seem unusual, but it has a purpose. :censored: :)

I personally think it's great to see some intensity. It will turn out well.

Check this link. If you don't like the F word, then ignore this post.

The Word "Fuck"

Perhaps one of the most interesting words in the English language today, is the word f***. Out of all the English words that begin with the letter 'f' ...f*** is the only word referred to as 'the f word... It's the one magical word. Just by its sound can describe pain, pleasure, hate and love. F***, as most words in the English language is derived from German ...the word fuieken, which means to strike.

In English, f*** falls into many grammatical categories:
As a transitive verb for instance.. John f-ed Shirley.
As an intransitive verb... Shirley f***s.

Its meaning is not always sexual, it can be used as...
An adjective such as... John's doing all the f-ing work.
As part of an adverb... Shirley talks too f-ing much.
As an adverb enhancing an adjective... Shirley is f-ing beautiful.
As a noun... I don't give a f***.
As part of a word... absof-inglutely -or- inf-ingcredible.
And as almost every word in a sentence... F*** the f-ing f-ers.

As you must realize, there aren't too many words with the versatility of f***...such as these examples describing situations such as:
Fraud: I got f-ed at the used car lot.
Dismay: ahhh f- it.
Trouble: I guess I'm really f-ed now.
Aggression: Don't f with me buddy.
Difficulty: I don't understand this f-ing question.
Inquiry: Who the f was that?
Dissatisfaction: I don't like what the f is going on here.
Incompetence: He's a f-off.
Dismissal: Why don't you go outside and play hide and go f- yourself...

I'm sure you can think of many more examples.

With all these multi-purpose applications, how can anyone be offended when you use the word. We say use this unique, flexible word more often in your daily speech.
It will identify the quality of your character immediately.

Say it loudly and proudly: F- YOU!

I would not worry to much about the language. If you pay attention to the conversation he is having, there is a ton of teaching going on. Further, the team needs some fire. I personally know a few players who played under Lou and they will tell you he was a absolute SOB on the practice field. He would tear a players head off. I think we all remember him yanking a face mask or two on game day. Todays feel good politically correct society makes me ill. Kids need an ass kicking sometimes. If you watch what he does, Tenuta tears them down, but also rebuilds them when the do things right. Finally, LB is a take no prisoners position, I want kids that have badass attitude.

I have the above on mp3 with a really uptight and proper sounding gentleman saying everything very matter-of-factly.....one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

Nothing wrong with a coach who fulfills his promises. Hopefully, we'll have the "nasty" and we'll be adding more trophies and championships to the lore. Go Irish!

I'm pretty sure your daughter and her 4-6 year old friends could've blocked better than ND's OL last season.

If Tenuta saying FUCK at practice all the time results in me NOT saying it in my house while watching one subpar offense after another torch the Irish D, then Jon, say what needs to be said!!!!

You know what, I wouldn't mess with her. I pity the first guy who tries to date her (for several reasons- one of which being me).

Were talking practice here- so the f what? He is coachin and using it as a motivator. I'll bet those guys want to do all they can to limit the amount they hear it w better play, and thats what counts.

Ask guys who have spent time in the military if they ever hear this type of language and whether or not it upsets them....then duck.

Lighten up, you sensitive folks who are surprised there is swearing in football. These are prolly the same people complaining that we need safer bullets so they don't casue so much damage when they hit somebody!!! :jerkit:

Tenuta's colorful language will fade faster than a snowflake should he be a major cog in producing a winning team. In the interim, I suggest we let him have his say.

That's the key...he *IS* teaching. Thesekids are learning something valuable from him, so I am all for it.

He uses the F bomb more as punctuation anyway...it's not personal. ;)

This is ironic. We have a writer hend-wringing over a friggin' FOOTBALL COACH using a common piece of guttural language to get his 6' something, 230 something pound LINEBACKERS to play like they should, and THIS is taken as a threat to ND's Catholic Mission. HOWEVER, 450 yards away, we have the effing VAGINA MONOLOGUES being performed, WITH JENKINS' effing BLESSING, and they call THAT "academic freedom!

Notre Dame, GIVE ME A F-ING BREAK !!
