Yeah, the Giants have found such talent as Rich Glover, Rocky Thompson, Ernie Wheelright, and a host of other unmemorable draft choices that "could play" right up until they put a NY helmet on.
Hey! They also found Lawrence Taylor, only the best defensive player in history!!! Not to mention Phil Simms, Mark Bavaro, Sam Huff, Frank Gifford, Harry Carson, or more recently Micheal Strahan, Jeremy Shockey, and oh yeah, some emerging young QB named Eli.
If you look at the drafts of any team over a long period of time, you're gonna see a lot of names you don't know, even in the 1st round. The draft is a hit or miss prospect, and generally there are a lot less hits than misses. Don't believe me? Ask the Browns how Tim Couch is working out (not to mention William Green, Gerard Warren, & Courtney Brown). Or ask the Cardinals how Thomas Jones, David Boston, Andre Wadsworth, and Tom Knight are working out for their franchise.
The Giants have had their fair share of stars and flops in the draft. Like most teams, for every Jeremy Shockey they have about 2 Ron Daynes. Its rare that you find a franchise draft well for more than a few years in a row though. And don't forget, they've gotten considerable production out of their later round picks. More than most teams I think. Strahan was a 2nd rounder, and he's turned into one of the best pass rushers in history and a sure first-ballot hall of famer. Bavaro was a 4th rounder I think and is still the best TE in franchise history (sorry Jeremy). And don't forget Jessie Armstead. He was a 7th rounder, and all he did was lead the defense to a superbowl in 2000 (where Kerry Collins imploded and gave the game away to Ray Lewis & co.).
