They don't make half that in minor league baseball. Rookies start at $1150 prr month while 3rd year AAA gets $2700 per month IN SEASON. That's only about $8 - 18K annually.

Life in the Minor Leagues | Think Blue LA

Reggie Bush would have stayed at Southern Cal.

And the big signing bonuses for the top draft picks are paid 100% by the parent MLB club. They are wholly unrelated to any revenues generated by the minor league team.

After looking up the NBA D League salaries, and the NFL Europe salaries, I would agree that I grossly overestimated the salary these guys might get. But I still think that we would find the best talent (the vast majority of 5* guys, and a good portion of the 4* guys) would end up going to this minor league, leaving colleges to pick from the dregs. Hell, Pat Dillingham would probably be a highly sought after recruit, in that system.

I'm surprised more players haven't gone the route of Brandon Jennings and signed with European BBall Leagues out of high school. Jennings made over $1.5M in his one season in the Italian league and another $2M in endorsements.

Delaney conveniently failed to mention basketball players have overseas options. Another reason I think he was targeting the American professional leagues and their ridiculous age restriction policies.

I can't speak for everyone but I wouldn't care if the top 1,000 football players skipped college.

MLB doesn't even have a stranglehold on signing all the top high schoolers away from college baseball and the money used to entice these players is a massive subsidy from MLB and not derived from their ability to generate revenue in the minors. An independent football "minor league" would have paltry resources as compared to its affiliated baseball counterparts.

Yeah, I can only imagine the reaction of a prospective football recruit who had visited a number of major BCS schools and saw the facilities available (Oregon's football performance center, etc), but ultimately end up deciding to play in a development league for the Rapid City Granite Faces.

That would do a serious disadvantage to everyone involved except for the 1% of the 1% of gifted athletes.

No education to fall back on, and look at what that model has done to college basketball.. it's not even close to being on the level it was before the rule change.

**** this generation's sense of entitlement (coming from a democrat, by the way).
What are you taking about, they changed the rule to REQUIRE college in the NBA? LOL

I agree with Delaney. It would help curtail the culture of a semi-pro atmosphere of the SEC. The rampant cheating going on around the league is ridiculous. There is a certain amount of kids that aren't taking advantage of getting an education (ie not really going to school, learning, graduating, etc) and just playing football.

It's frankly killing the idea of amatuerism in college football. I personally don't want to see college football becoming semipro football. I would love to see an Olympic model where kids could market themselves outside of the universities and a semi pro league where kids that don't care about education can go throw caution to the wind and quit denegrading the soul of college football.
no it won't because the t,v revnue has gotten so large were everybody get's a piece it just all depends on what you will allow yourselfs ( as in conferences) to do to get it and it's just not the SEC that does it......ALL OF THEM DO IT !!! it's just that the SEC has taken it to another level i.e the Cam Knewton sweepstakes, the craziness that went on at UF during the Urban Myer tenure and obviously the Johnny Football shenigans that's been going on of late, but you best believe this circus type atmosphere that the SEC has created has made that conference a helluva lotta money which makes money for NC2A ......there's no money in semipro anything but it is in the Pac-12, The Big Ten, hell even the ACC......you get my point
I'll take my money under the table........Good Day
