I've been having this conversation with a friend over the last few days, so I thought I'd see what you all think.

Every year in football, coaches are hired and fired, but this year it seems to me, there will be a lot of openings in the NFL, and at colleges, with not so many qualified replacements. I don't keep up with many of the Asst. Coaches at either level, and I can't think of many standouts ready to step up.

So, I'm wondering, who do you think will be replaced this year in the NFL or college? Who would you suggest as a replacement? Who are some outstanding Asst. Coaches you think are ready? Who will jump college to pro, or vise versa?

Thanks, Bob

In general, I think college coaches will be courted a lot more aggressively this offseason to pro jobs due to Harbaugh's success. Personally, I can't really think of any college coaches that are doing well and also willing to leave their jobs. As far as pro coaches, Jim Caldwell will probably have to go, and Sparano is the other one that comes to mind. Also, the poodle's not doing too well nowadays.

Also have guys not currently coaching that I could see returning. Urban and Cowher come to mind immediately, and Gruden just signed an extension but I could see him coaching again as well.

Also have coaches from some mid-majors that could be looked at. Petersen, whoever is in charge of Southern Miss/Cinci/Baylor at the moment. Calhoun from AF almost went to Tennessee a few years ago. Niumatalolo seems happy at Navy, but Jasper was rumored to be heading to Vandy last year.

From BGIF's link, Jagodzinski is another one to keep an eye on. He was doing well at BC before that whole debacle.

Some position we've talked about:

Pete Carroll in Seattle....I think he's toast, my friend thinks he's secure.

Rick Neuheisel at UCLA......toast.

Tony Sparano at Miami......toast.

Jim Caldwell at Indy......toast....Interesting side conversation...will Peyton retire from playing and move to coaching??

This site is more active during late November, December and January when pink slips are issued and people are scrambling.

Some recent rumors:

11/3
South Carolina: There's a rumor swirling around out there that Steve Spurrier plans to retire at the end of the season due to issues with his athletic director. Sources within the program tell us this is not the case and the head ball coach will return.

11/1
Miami: Univeristy officials have reached out to Al Golden's representative to discuss reworking his contract according to reports from CBS Sports. Golden was blindsided by the "Nevin Shapiro" allegations this past August which the NCAA is still investigating.

Franchione bailed on Bama because they blindsided him on their recruiting scandal.

10/31
Arizona: We have been told by people close to the situation that Chris Petersen will not make this his next home. We also have been told that the administration feels that Mike Leach would not be a good fit.

Leach is tan, rested, and ready. (Better have a strong AD).

10/25
Clemson: We hear that Clemson is working to structure a new agreement to lock offensive coordinator Chad Morris in place for years (or at least make the buyout far more painful).

10/18
Louisville: Charlie Strong has agreed to a new 7 year deal that will take him through June of 2018. The extension will also increase his pay scale from $1.6 million per year to $2.3 million.
Charlie's not going anywhere. $2.3 mil to coach at the Ville!

Boise State: Chris Petersen has had a couple changes made to his 5 year contract. Petersen will receive an automatic one year extension for every 8 win season and that milestone will also include a $100,000 bonus (double what it was previously). The contract also includes a $150,000 bonus for a BCS bert and and additional $100,000 for a conference championship.
Petersen will be there forever at that rate. BSU hasn't had less than 8 wins since '98. Life will be tougher in the BE but there will still be enough Wyomings, Idahos, and Utah States.

I'm strongly hoping that there is always a strong need for coaches. It'll make my career ALOT easier.

Mississippi Will Be Interviewing.

There's a vacancy!

Houston Nutt has been fired at Ole Miss (along with the AD)

Malzahn, Leach, Strong, and Sumlin are names in the news.
