With all the axes being dropped this weekend, I though we needed a thread dedicated to the coaching carousel in D1 CFB.

Texas A&M parts ways w/ Franchione after he resigns yesterday
Rumors have been rampant for awhile that Tommy Tuberville will leave Auburn for
College Station.

Nebraska and Don Tom Osbourne put a hit out on Callahan. At this point the favorites
that I've heard mentioned to replace him include Turner Gill & Bo Pellini.

Ole Miss confirmed that Orgeron was safe in '08. Then his Rebs blew a comfortable lead
to lose on a last second field goal to thier instate rival. They will announce his firing
today. Auburn's DC, Brent Muschamp, is a leading candidate. If the Hogs part ways w/
Houston Nutt, he'll be at the top of Ole Miss list, too.

Most pundits seem to think the loss to Ark. yesterday will make Les Miles decision a lot
easier now that his team is out of the NC hunt. I'm sure there's plenty of Tiger faithful
that would help Les pack & drive him to Ann Arbor.

Feel free to add to or correct anything regarding the coaching changes

The irony of Les Miles/LSU is he said earlier this week he was LSU all the way. The loss yesterday seems to have changed that. Very Saban-esque

I hope Tuberville stays at Auburn, that way if Charlie doesn't work out maybe we could get him. He seems like a good coach to me and can win the big games for sure.

Tuberville doesn't have a great reputation for class and integrity. Maybe that's why he coaches in the SEC, or maybe the SEC made him that way. But I don't think he is the type of coach ND would want.

Yes, he may have had good results, but he's been in the SEC (aka NFL minor leagues) where most schools graduate their scholarship players in the 50% range, but most lower, and where nearly all of your non-conf games are against D-IAA schools or the Sunbelt.

I believe this year is the first in the last 15-20 yrs that the SEC has not had a single team on some type of probation.

IMO, I can't think of the big name coaches in the SEC ND would really want (Saban, Miles, Fulmer, Spurrier, Tuberville, Nutt), except Meyer. And whether he turns out to be a typical SEC coach will be seen. If the wins come in but the graduation rate plummets, then he's one of the boys.

Firing Line

Firing Line

Bill Callahan at Nebraska - Fired
Ed Orgeron - Dang ole fired
LLLLLoyd Carr - 'Retiring'...heh
Dennis Franchione - 'Retiring' - even less believable than Carr

Ok here is the point of all this - what do you make of the coaching turnover this season? Who does scUM bring in to replace that guy that can't beat OSU? Who gets nabbed from over-achieving teams to replace these guys? Does ND fire Latina or White? Just throw out coaching thoughts from around the NCAA, and how it will affect the Irish and our opponents.

I think that Les Miles not going to Michigan is fantastic for us. I think he has the right attitude to bring an SEC style program (and recruits) to Ann (whore) Arbor. They are not going to get a first choice here, and if its Kelly from Cincinnati, I think it will take him a couple of seasons to get settled in.

It's our turn to drop a 20-30 point victory on the skunkbears. Next year.

Well aparently UM offered Kirk Ferantz(sp). A lot of scUM fans are very unhappy because he said he will definitly consider it.

I heard about that and also a rumor about someone from Cincinnati? To me Ferentz is... well sort of a gamble for them. He wouldn't have much national recruiting experience but he obviously has been a HC with a successful record at times.

I dunno about Miles. He has taken some awful chances, including some that seem to make little/no sense in the course of games. LSU can always get a lot of Louisiana boys to come play at Hometown U. Maybe you are right about his recruiting abilities but he sure does have an advantange where he is now. Where was Miles before LSU?

Ah ok, well though sportscenter is practically whisper down the lane, I guess he is out.

Although Marco of NDChooChoo may be nuts (not sure if I am kidding about this or not) he said something to the effect of scUM might have lost out on their first two choices and are scrambling after their third started looking at another offer. Anyone hear about this or is Marco rambling?

That will never happen. We will never beat Michigan by 20-30. We hardly can beat other teams by that margin.

Tell 'em to call Willingham....he backed into the ND job when the 1st and 2nd choice didn't pan out!!! Plus we know that he will be needing a job by years end!!!

What if he and Dorrell were both fired this year? I feel like the team looking to avoid the 'race card debate' would have to be quicker with the draw to dump them. Dorrell might be able to get another job though as he has at least kept them competitive and brought in decent talent.

Some football playing scUM alum may be pretty dumb, but I doubt anyone would hire Ty as a HC at this point. I really couldn't even see a MAC school picking him up beyond a coordinator role. Kind of like John L. Hmmmm I really wonder if they will can him after this year. God knows the fans seem to be calling for his head.

Yep, fire everyone. Just clean house. It's all the coaches' fault, anyway.

Every team who has bad mouthed ND this year should have to hire Willingham for a three year period. After three years, the teams would have to publicly apologize to us before they could fire him.

Woo! Rumors, these. Not facts. The first and foremost is really close to a fact type thing, as close as these things can be, but if the most likely outcome... er... comes out, no one will ever know if this was true or not. So take the following FWIW, which is not to say I lack confidence in the voracity of the following... it's just that much of it is, by its very nature, un-confirmable. Thus the "rumormongering" label and not the "actual news" label. End justifications.

I've sat on this a couple days waiting for some third-party corroboration and now I have it: Kirk Ferentz has been offered the Michigan job. The general feeling is he will turn it down out of fidelity to Iowa, in case you were thinking of making a late-night run to Ann Arbor (or Iowa City) Torch & Pitchfork. I do realize that this -- unlike the Lloyd thing -- is unlikely to ever be publicly acknowledged if Ferentz turns it down, but this comes from someone in a position to know, and how. The third-party corroboration comes from a couple Iowa insiders reporting things afoot that, unfortunately, I am not at liberty to disclose.

Suffice it to say that Wednesday's post on Ferentz not making sense and this being a weird rumor is withdrawn: there's a real chance he's the next coach. It's not probable given Ferentz's deep ties to Iowa, but it's not Kevin Stallings as I suggested earlier.

BONUS item that I don't have multiple sources on, so consider this not 100% reliable, but logical: Grand Valley's athletic director has been contacted by a Michigan representative doing due diligence on Brian Kelly. That representative? Lloyd Carr. That might explain the prominence in Ferentz in the search. The Horror, evidently, was not enough to shake Carr's influence despite the claims made in his outgoing press conference.

Miles did a pretty good job at OK State prior to taking the LSU job. His strength is recruiting. As you can see from watching LSU this year, he is not a good gameday coach. I think he is gone to Michigan. He refuses to come out and slam the door on them publicly. If he goes to Michigan, I think LSU would be wise to promote Pellini to head coach. A lot of other coaching decisions will probably depend on what happens with Miles and the Michigan job.

Yea whenever coaches say they are 'just focusing on this season' and refuse to say they aren't moving, I get the feeling they are giving it a long hard look.

All I was saying in regards to the recruiting was that LSU is vastly in-state players - moreso than scUM.

Well after Miles and the boys lost to Ark. on sat. he may be run out of town by the tiger faithful. As far as any coaching changes on the N.D. staff, I'm going to let Charlie decide that and not try and worry about it. Was the play of certain positions horrible this season, most defitently. But alot of things can factor into that. So lets be patient and if no changes are made, except Charlie's decision.

Also Mike Sherman is in at Texas A&M.

Wouldn't be surprised if 7-5 Gailey is indeed fired. Frankly it doesn't matter who Duke brings in in the immediate future. This year for us is every year for them.
