I was pretty excited about this kid coming out of high school. I know he didn't play as a freshman but does anyone have any clue how he is doing in spring ball. Everything I read seems to be about poszluzny and mcdonald.

He did redshirt last year, but I expect him to see the field some this year. He is behind some really good players. The switch to the 3-4 should help him see the field

In practice right now, he's on the 2nd team with Pazkorz, behind Te'o and McDonald. That's not bad considering he has 4 years of eligibility left going into next year. Looks like he's making progress, and like Polish said, the move to the 3-4 probably will help him see the field more...

Wasn't his nickname baby hercules or something?

I went back though his recruit profile and didn't find a nickname, no Carlos The Crusher, no Carlos The Bull, nor No Neck Calabrese, not even a reference to Lucca Brazzi.

There were the usual "he'll start as a freshman" posts but Mat33 noted with the talent ND has at LB he probably won't start untill he's a Jr. OCIrish noted the change to 3-4 defense (the last time not this time) would bode well for him seeing PT.

I watched the highlights of the BG game and he had a nice pick against Crist.

I agree .... I was very impressed w/ his play on Sat. One would expect Teo to excel, which he did, but Carlo's play was the most surprising to me from the defensive side.

He was my sleeper recruit for his class. Everyone was so focused on Teo and I believe this kid will be a stud when all is done. He just destroyed people in HS. Further, he played with that Zorich anger in HS that I believe we have been missing. I look for a great 3 man rotation of McDonald, Calabrese and Teo on the ILB positions. It is nice to have depth!!

Agree completely. Carlo is a bit of a project but he is a football player. I expect him to be a starter at some point in his career. Especially in a 3-4 you can hide some of his athletic shortcomings

I expect him to see playing time this year and see him becoming a starter at ND. I believe he was in the top 3 w/ tackles at the B&G game.

C4 Set To Explode

C4 Set To Explode

...

Calabrese didn’t see any playing time as a freshman in 2009, absorbing as much as he could as a reserve middle linebacker in the 4-3 defensive alignment. Though he would have liked being on the field, Calabrese understood his role and got the most out of it.

“Last year was a good year to sit out and learn, learn the college speed and the plays and how much bigger the guys are,” he said.

The coaching change, which brings with it a switch back to the 3-4 defense, has brought a little extra spark out of the guy who earned the nickname “C4” at Verona High School. Admittedly “a little overweight” this winter, Calabrese has streamlined his frame a bit, picking up some more speed in the process.

...

That speed is a necessary trait in Diaco’s system – “if you can’t run, you can’t play,” as Calabrese put it. Despite all of the adjustments that the sophomore has had to make during the offseason, though, he’s a big fan of his current situation.

“This system’s great,” he said. “The middle linebackers just run downhill, banging into people, and that’s what I like to do.”

Calabrese put his added zest for the sport on display during Saturday’s Blue-Gold Game, collecting five tackles (including one for loss) and an interception.
