This morning John Clayton made a comment that Brian Kelly could be a candidate for Carolina Panthers head coaching job at the end of the season. Has anybody else heard this? Clayton is a reliable source and doesn't just make this stuff up.

Kelly is not an NFL coach.

This. At least not yet. I think Kelly has great potential, but NFL organizations aren't going to hire a guy who's highlight is a Big East championship, especially with a number of very good, proven NFL coaches around.

Frankly, that makes zero sense. And I'm 99% sure Kelly wouldn't even be interested.

I do not think Kelly's style would fit the NFL at all. And there are many, many more coaches who have a better resume and would be better fits in the pros. My guess is he thought, "Who is a good coach who has moved around a lot? Brian Kelly!"

I don't think Kelly will ever be a NFL candidate. In fact I think he is going to be at ND a long long time.

No chance Kelly is leaving ND to go coach in Carolina. It just surprised me when Clayton made the comment. Kelly knows he is a college coach and I hope he stays Notre Dames coach for a long long time.

Guys, have we not learned from the past? You don't just pull BK's name from thin air, especially for an NFL job. This is clearly coming from BK's camp. Think Weis, year 1. Nothing more than trying to obtain leverage for a longer deal or more $. Hopefully Jack won't take the bait.

He just said today in his presser that he's not interested in any other jobs...

This would make no sense for him that team sucks. I think the front runner will Bill Cowher. Perfect timing to come back.

Per Kelly today:

“Usually at this time, I usually have to begin by saying I’m not interested in any other jobs. I love the job I have here at the University of Notre Dame. The good part about it and the bad part about it is that when you’re 7-5, you don’t have to worry about those things. You just worry about where you are and be thankful that you got one year in and still have got a couple years left.”

“For me, it’s been an incredible experience. I think I said it then, it was a dream come true. I think what I can tell you now is that there’s no job like being the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame."

“It certainly was, for me, a great experience. Some highs, some lows, but it’s what I thought it would be and that is the ability to coach guys that are very talented both on and off the field. That’s really why I wanted to be the head coach at Notre Dame. I wanted to be able to continue to work toward the academics and the achievement that we had and develop a championship football team.”

Kelly made alot of forward progress this year it would not benefit him at all to have put in all that hard work to leave one year later not happening. Not to mention the money he is getting here is probably more then what the panthers would offer. I think that Kelly's style of offense is very good in college but i am not quite sure how well it would work at the pro level. I can say that Kelly is 100% staying at ND.

I disagree completely. He's got this program trending in the right direction, but he was only 7-5 and has very few accomplishments that would warrant an NFL job. Plus what leverage does he have? Weis put together a better record and went to a BCS game in his first year. He also came from the NFL and was extremely successful there as an OC.

It was way more likely that some team would call Weis to fill a head coaching vacancy in the NFL after his first year than for Kelly to get calls to fill a vacancy now.

No offense dude, but I do not follow that train of thought. Weis came from the NFL, was brought up through the NFL, had multiple super bowl rings and was taking a team that was projected to go 0-6 to start the season within a play of beating "the team of the decade." He was getting legitimate attention from multiple NFL teams.

To assume that BK's camp is leaking information to this effect after a rough 7-5 season is ludicrous and illogical. There is literally 0 evidence to support that line of reasoning.

THIS IS ****ING BULL****!

This is ESPN's attempt at stirring up drama at ND, trying to cause recruits to decommit. They have no reason to think Kelly would be interested.

I seriously want to teabag every single ESPN affiliate. They are jackasses.

Settle down...

As said, Weis isn't comparable. He'd won multiple super bowls and was an established, respected force in the NFL. Also had a much better first year.

Quick, we better offer him a huge contract to keep other suitors from coming in and snatching him up! Oh wait...we did that once before with some guy named Charlie. I wouldn't be worried about the NFL or anyone else nabbing Kelly right now. I think he is fully committed to Notre Dame and getting the program back to where it belongs.

You guys are not understanding the point I am trying to make. BK of course is not an NFL candidate. Not even close. But even the mere mention of his name connected to a NFL job can get people riled up, as evidenced by this thread. If you are BK's agent, why not place a well-timed leak in an attempt to potentially get you and your client more money? That's all I am saying. There is no argument to be had here unless you can prove to me it didn't originate from BK's camp. Who else would put a rumor like that out there given that he is not an NFL caliber coach (at least not yet)? Remember, as much as BK proclaims his love for ND, it is still a business.
