So i got to thinking today and maybe I'm completely off base here but.... Am I the only one that thinks that maybe the loss to Stanford last weekend was a good thing? I know the players will never say it, but when you lose a game by a couple points you can sort of fool yourself by saying "well maybe a play here or there and we win". Getting embarrassed like what happened on Saturday can be a wake up call to the team.

Who knows. Maybe it's just me.

I hope you are right, but losing 2 in a row should have been a wake up call. Until we can get a pass rush and not allow pressure without being blitzed, it is going to be painful. The team will live an die with the play on the lines, and for the past few years, we have been losing those battles.

The way i took it is sometimes when you are in a close fight u tell ur self that hey i won that thing but it could have went either way! so out of the two ways that we have lost over the last 2 years(with stanford being the most lop sided i think) this could be a new kind of wake up call.

I think its one of those things that could send it either way. 2 close losses followed by a thumping hurts. And frankly if this was last year I think it would have led to collapse. I think Kelly is a better motivator than Weis was, but this game will tell.

There is no reason to lose this game.

Well, ignoring the almost irrelevant comments about how [regardless of the thread topic] we're going to lose horribly again without hope of recovery for the next decade [yeh, exaggerating but some of that is tedious, pal, and how many "v-bucks" one wins is pretty teenager-ish], here's what I think I know from playing and coaching on teams: Losing ALWAYS affects you if you're worth a damn as a competitor. But all teams are not alike. Some teams are full of strong leaders. Losses of any kind get those guys raging, and motivating their colleagues. I fear that we don't have that sort of leadership yet. Notice what Kelly has said in his past two interviews: he is going to "push" Manti out there [vis-a-vis leadership]. Kelly IS WORRIED about leadership. He is desperately trying to push Manti to assume the role even though he's just a sophomore [a tough thing for him, and God bless him, I don't think that it's naturally in his personality to get in others' faces]. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The point is that bad losses only "work" if you have a situation where the Staff doesn't know what's happening [and I don't believe that for a second], or you have powerful personalities to lead but a team functioning well below it's potential. OK, we seem to be functioning below our potential, but do we have the personalities to raise the masses up?? Teams that do not have this may sit around after such losses staring at one another and actually get worse. Emotions often lead to motivation play-after-play, and that leads to wins and/or losses. We've got coaches. We've got talent. Do we have leaders?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As this season has gone forward, I have wondered if this isn't one of the bigger burdens that Notre Dame carries around as far as winning football games is concerned. We have too many nice, civilized guys. That's great for off the field, but I'd take a whole set of Dr. Jekylls and Mr. Hydes. [Forgive me Lord].

I'm hoping the blowout loss will show the offense that Dayne needs to run the ball. A close loss would have just made everybody think that we need a close call or a ball to bounce our way. But now we know that the spread doesn't work without the QB being mobile.

To be great at anything, you always have to review and grow. You see guys like Jordan and Tiger woods actually changing their game in their prime to get better. With ND right now, they will do it through mistakes. So, yeah, it can be a good thing. I think it's a good thing in terms of team toughness. I don't think it's something where the team can just flip the switch, "Oh, that's what we need to do," and start winning. I think it is clear from the Stanford game that ND has a bit further to go. But the loss can help in terms of toughness etc.

Do you really think “Losing” is a thing, with its own form; something to which we need respond? I believe with my heart and soul, the most the real winners take out of a loss is “technique on how to do something better” next time. The biggest winners I can think of don’t consider a loss as a “black mark”, or a time to asses your direction or methodology; it is just a postponement of reaching a goal; they just keep on doing what it is that they do. BK said as much in an interview I saw. Maybe this is how our Irish learn how to win.

What the two close losses followed by a “not so close loss” did for me is bring into focus something I never considered. Education is most important. Don’t read anything extra into this statement: What we have (predominantly not exclusively) is a bunch of nice young men interested in getting a fine education.

After we signed the Atkinson’s, I got to thinking about their dad, and the late Jack Tatum. Oakland was a bitch in the early to mid seventies. If it hadn’t been for the Steelers, they would have been the team. There is an interesting story about Russ Francis, the great tight end who played for New England against them. Atkinson decked him, while Francis was running a route. When asked why, Atkinson noted their difference in size, and stated that was just the way it was going to be all day.

Granted, there is a fine line between good aggressive play, and felony assault; but whom do we have that is even willing to risk seeing the inside of a cell, except for a beer charge? Now I tend to exaggerate to make a point, but you can be too nice, too much of a gentleman. I think that mentality goes a long way to explain a string of “close losses.” And this is what I hope everyone gets out of “it.”
