Surprise: How much back-up Rudolph has to give Sam Young. On that safety that we had against BC - Rudolph goes into the slot and 86blows by Young. Most of the time Rudolph lined alongside Young and 86 moved around.

Not Young's fault... Jimmy rolled into the pressure.

Good - OLine
Bad - Inability to stop anyone in critical situations

Inability to stop anyone in critical situations???

In addition to UW game you have forgotten, the stop of Southern Cal that got ND back in that game, here's part of the recap from the BC game which you obviously missed:

BC had a chance to take control after scoring on its first possession of the first half to take a 16-13 lead, but the Irish defense came up big at key times.
  • First the Irish forced a fumble by Montel Harris at their 1 on BC's second possession of the second half.
  • It was the second lost fumble by Harris, who came into the game with a streak of 356 touches without a fumble.(It ended a BC drive and lead to ND FG)
  • Then on BC's next (2nd half) possession, McCarthy intercepted a pass by Shinskie at the Notre Dame 23.
  • McCarthy came up with another interception at the Notre Dame 26 with 4:23 left, that could have sealed the win. But the Irish offense went three-and-out and BC got the ball back at its own 32. On fourth-and-16, Shinskie completed a 28-yard pass to Rich Gunnell, who had 10 catches for 179 yards.m On the next play, McCarthy was called for pass interference on a pass to Justin Jarvis.
  • Two plays later, Irish linebacker Brian Smith made the final interception (at the ND 26).

Harrison's Smith's Rival Profile listed him with a 4.38, 40.

Armando Allen's Rival Profile listed him with a 4.31, 40.

i wasn't arguing that he wasn't clocked with that speed. i was merely saying i don't see it translate to the field. to me, he's one of the slower db's. i don't see any recovery speed nor reactionary speed.

i guess he has top end speed but doesn't have the initial burst.

I have two dissapointments: Loss to Michigan, "The Shirt"- not a fan of the color, reminds me of phlemy vomit!
biggest Surprise: How much Clausen has matured since last year, like the way he throws the ball away more and looks over the field.

I don't know if he has that kind of top end speed. I listed Allen's time since people say he has no top speed either. How accurate are the gurus?

who knows. i do remember allen's first hand off (against GT i believe) and he showed that burst that he was hyped about. but then as the game got ugly he was running scared. this season his running with an attitude. i think he still has the speed cuz we see it every now and then.

but in harrison's case, i may question the guru's cuz he's not showing me squat as far as speed is concerned. he let a slow ass qb fake him out of his jock strap....i don't care that he got airborne, he didn't recover at all.

Offense + : How Golden still gets open and makes the catches he does when double/triple covered. Wow!

Offense - : How we still don't really use the double tight end (please catch a ball Ragone).

Defense + : the consecutive goal line stands

Defense - : Lack of pressure on the QB

Young's job is to ensure that there is no pressure. Young's "fault" is that there was pressure for Clausen to roll into, in the first place.

Young's job is to seal off his man and maintain a pocket, on that play there wasn't a moving pocket, so when Jimmy left the pocket towards the right side Young's man was right there. It wasn't the fault of our right tackle. Clausen got flushed from the pocket evaded towards Young, Clausen got sacked. If Young had been beat Clausen would have evaded towards Duncan.

Agree with both you guys, but I wish Clausen would step up into the pocket more often. He's been pretty good about it, but there are still situations like the safety where he rolls out to his right instead of stepping up. Maybe he wasnt as confident considering everytime he stepped up in the pocket against USC he was getting sacked, but I still feel like there's a lot of plays where he rolls out and has to throw it away as opposed to being able to step up and by some time.

well put, but i don't think clausen got flushed....he lost his normal pocket presence. all he needed to do was step up in the pocket.

Positive:
-I like how the offense (thank you Golden) continues to produce with Floyd out and guys like Parris stepping up.
-I like the defenses ability to stop the run.

Negative:
-Man I wish we could just put teams away, love the
W's though!
-The secondary keeps other teams in the game.

Our Secondry are being used to play the run more, which is half the reason our RD is OK and our PD is so poor, our D can't have one without the other, or so it seems?
