I'm thinking anything more than 8 teams is just too much, and less than 8 would rule out the cinderella factor. I think it is important to keep the regular season meaniful (was it really this year for LSU, OK St?), and I would also like to keep some of the bowl tie ins. My thoughts.....

-8 teams total
-6 auto conf champs (SEC, Big 12, Big 10, P12 ACC, Big E)
-2 at large (smaller conf champ, Ind) highest ranked outside of the above 6 confs)
-You must win your conference championship (keeps the regular season importance)
-No more than 1 team per conference (sorry Bama, the regular season matters....)
-Every year, First Rd SECvsBig12, Pac12vsBig10, BigEvsACC, At Large vs At Large (semi superconf)
-Every year, 2nd Rd paired by ranking/rating from computers only......
-Rose Bowl (Big10 vs Pac12
-Orange Bowl (BigE vs ACC)
-Sugar Bowl (SEC vs Big12)
-Fiesta or Cotton or Sun (if you want to go old school) for at large teams
-1st, 2nd and 3rd round are played back to back to back weeks,
-2nd and 3rd round in the same city
-You still have all the other meaningless bowls

Bonus
-Take compliance out of the school's hands, give it to the NCAA
-Let ineliglble schools play for their conf championship
-If a conf champ is ineligible, the conf gives up their spot to another at large
-You must have GPA% target and graduation rate target % for bowl spot
-End oversigning, end grey-shirting, end cuts
-To qualify, you must have a min amount of D1 schools scheduled.

I'm for

1. 6-team playoff where the two highest ranked teams get byes.
2. I would eliminate auto-qualifiers for any conference
This x100000000000.

I have been clamoring for these two changes for a decade now (and I was only 12 years old back then).

In an 8 team with requirements noted above, it would have been....

Sugar Bowl - LSU vs OK St
Rose Bowl - Oregon or Vacant if USC vs Wisconsin
Orange Bowl - Clemson vs W. Virginia
At Large - Boise St. Vs S. Miss

We actually had two of the games...

2nd Round Actual
LSU/OKSt Vs BoiseSt/S.Miss
Oregon Vs W. Virginia

Pros
Would have been great to see any of the first and second round game possibilities
Settling it on the field
LSU or OK St vs BSU... nice...

Cons
Would have probably ended up with LSU vs Oregon which is a repeat of the first game of the season.... At least it would have been more exciting than last night's yawner....

I agree eight are enough. As far back as I can remember there has never been a NC who was ranked lower than eight before the final rank. The coaches should never be allowed to vote as they can only fairly evaluate at most their opponents.
Better would be some computer ranking which considers SOC and national standings in both defensive and offensive categories. Fifty points and a shutout against the reserve team of the little sisters of the poor should not count the same as a close game against a top five team, as it does now.
As my mother used to say, "eight is enough."

I say the NFL and MLB need to do away with expanded playoffs... that is injustice as well...

wildcards winning championships after not winning a divisoion WITHIN a conference after 162/16/82 games??? That is as big of garbage as anything in college football.

to each their own.

Long live the Rose Bowl.

One thing I would love for there to be a fluctuating number of playoff teams. Make the BCS system improved and have any teams with a ranking above a certain percentage in the playoffs. Like if it was .800, this year the 4 playoff teams would be LSU, Alabama, Okie State, and Stanford. Last year it would have been Auburn, Oregon, TCU, Stanford, and Wisconsin. I like it that way since there will never be a steady number of teams who deserve a shot at the national championship, and .800 seems to be where the first drop-off occurs.

Also the first rounds would have to be home games for the higher seed because it would be too hard on fans.

I do not think there is a perfect system. There are a couple of things that bother me though. One is the auto qualifier for Conference alignment in the current system. (except the Rose Bowl...call me an old fuddy duddy) The bowls made a BIG mistake when they aligned themselves with conferences and taking the winner or 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 6th place team in a conference. Most of the time that does not make for the most exciting bowl games. Let the Bowl committee go out and try to make what they think is the best match up.

The other thing that bothers me A LOT is the power ESPN has in all this. They are really the ones pushing for the so called "super conferences". They are also the ones that hold TV contracts on almost all the bowl games. The idea behind this as I understand is they want four "super conferences" so then they can use this as the basis of the 4 team play off. The four Conference Champions would make up the four teams. More and more it seems that ESPN is running College Football and not the NCAA.... Keep in mind that with the 4 super conference system the 4 conference Commissioners could sit down and decide that they do not need the NCAA as the governing body, and do it themselves. This would not be good for College Football at all....IMHO

just my 2 cents...........

NCAA Prez supports 4 team playoff. Would prefer 8 per above, but 4 is better than what we currently have.
