It was not my dad's finest moment, but he was still young and foolish. He felt bad about it. By the time he confessed 30 years later, the guy could laugh about it.

Yeah, I definitely wasn’t trying to imply that your dad was a bad person. We all do things we regret, especially when we’re young. It was just an especially bad practical joke, in my opinion. It’s good that the guy didn’t harbor any ill will so many years later (for both himself and your dad 😆)

Let me share a story of a practical joke that almost resulted in some violence. One of my dad's coworkers was in the Army National Guard in the '60s and absolutely terrified about his unit getting mobilized and sent to Nam. His enlistment was almost up and he'd been telling everyone how thankful he was that in a couple more weeks he'd be out and safe. My dad got a relative to call this guy at work and pretend to be a sergeant in Montgomery with the ANG and notifying him that he and part of his unit were being activated as of the following week and being sent to Nam, and he was to report to Montgomery the following Monday morning at 6am for shots, a physical, and etc. with a flight to Nam scheduled for the following day. Dude about had a stroke. My dad said he sat in his office shaking and crying, and my dad felt bad about it, not realizing the guy would take it that badly.

The guy called his unit commander then the state headquarters in Montgomery before finally understanding he'd been pranked. He was NOT amused. He made it clear that if he ever found out who'd done it, he'd beat them with a bat and didn't care if he went to jail for it. He was seriously rattled and furious. My dad NEVER told him it was him until decades later. LOL
I take it he was drafted? I could see why he'd be scared to go, especially if he was forced into it. Beating with a bat over a prank seems a bit extreme, but I probably would have been a little pissed at first once I found out it was a prank. I think I'd have a big sigh of relief and then laugh about it though.

No, I think he'd volunteered to join the National Guard as a 20-something in the '50s, then when we started getting heavily involved in Nam in the '60s, he was really scared of ending up there. I think the prank so shook and terrified him that he couldn't see the humor in it for a long time. I think it was the early '90s before my dad finally confessed. He mentioned it at my dad's funeral ten years ago.

Sounds like they were 10-15 years older than me, but I can see why he wasn't happy. When I graduated from HS, the draft was still in effect and Viet Nam was still going. I would have served if my birthdate had been called, but I was relieved when it came up at #323.
