Can't complain about a #2 ranking. U$C down to 6. Was surprised OK stayed in the Top 10.

I wish they'd wait a few weeks before they released the polls. Teams losing early (like OU and Auburn last year) and remaining in the top ten just amazes me. Essentially, you could be 0-2 early, win the rest of your games and surpass a team that loses late in the season. I'm glad to see ND up there, I think the D will be much better than people give them credit for and I think OSU's D will be exposed - the whole concept of being "reloaded" with talent with a bunch of young/unproven players and being ranked #1 - I just don't understand.IMO

I'm sure the Fiesta Bowl outcome is also the reason for more 1st place votes for OSU. There's a perception there that will make poll voters not want to rank ND higher than the team that beat them last season.

No, but going 11-1 and beating Georgia in atlanta does. IMO, my vote for no. 1 would go to WVU, ND #2, OSU, #3. WVU impressed me more overall than any other team did last year, with two Freshman at the helm. They should only improve this year and do not want to face them in the BCS championship.

GO IRISH!!!!

I agree West Virginia is too high. They may very well go undefeated, but thats because of a weak schedule. It would be more fair to ranked them around 10 or so because at 5 they can quicky become one or two if a few teams ahead of them lose, and there is no way they deserve to be number 1 or 2 by midseason or earlier..

LSU should be ahead of Florida.

WOW, I'm amazed by this, really I am, what is not to like about WVU, forget their schedule they can't help the fact that BC, Va. Tech and Miami defected. Was it our fault last year that we didn't end up beating only but one ranked team, no it just sometimes plays out that way. We both played Pitt last year and beat em by about the same. Very disappointed in this site for the first time since I joined.

i was blown away by wvu against georgia last year too, but that offensive firepower wont catch any top tiers this year in a bowl game. plus even though they won, georgia still put a whippin on their defense. and georgia isn't your standard rack up the points style of offense. they're good but even with a weak schedule, all a team has to do is have a well run spread offense and it'll be a nail biter for sure. any of the other teams in the top ten would be overwhelmingly favored in a game with wvu. maybe wvu could pull it out but a top 5 shouldnt be an underdog to teams behind them.

WVU doesn't even bring in top 30 talent, what makes you think they should be ranked so high. If they played in a major conference they'd be an average 6 or 7 win team at best.

Looking at rivals, their last four recruiting classes have ranked 52, 31, 47, and 47 with a star rating of 2.63, 2.48, 2.41, and 2.52. C'mon you can't possibly tell me thats championship caliber talent. Granted stars and rankings don't mean everything, but they deserve some merit considering the only team to win a NC the last 20 years without top 20talent was Nebraska.

Its unfair because they can breeze through an easy schedule than play in the NC and possibly win because anything can happen in one game.If their was a playoff system a team like WVU would never play in a NC because there is no way a team with their talent level could beat 3 or 4 elite teams in a row. If they want to play in a NC they need to schedule better teams and earn it like the rest of us.

On a side note Louisville is getting there, if Petrino sticks around they'll be landing top 10- 15 recruiting classes consistently. Their recruiting is improving every year, WVU recruiting hasn't picked up yet despite winning 11 games last year.

Yeah that was a surprise and a great win for the Big East, but any team can win on a given day. If they played Georgia 10 times they might lose 8 or 9 times.

I agree that WVU will not be catching any team by suprise this year and the louisville game at louisville on a ESPN thursday night looms large, they'll be the dog in that game. But using the fact that Georgia came back on WVU as a reason, I believe we were up big on Tennesse(by the way the 2nd worst offense in the SEC, way behind Georgia) last year and they came back. 21-3 halftime 21-21 at the end of the 3rd.

Recruiting rankings are subjective, very subjective. But if you were to go back and rank WVU's team right now, they would have at 3 5 star guys on offense, White, Slaton and Mozez(all american center) and 3 4 star guys on defense, wicks, mclee and i forget the other guy on the dline. It's always not about rankings their senior year. That's one reason they deserve the ranking. Second they have a great coach. third last year's results. fourth their schedule I agree though year in and year out, it would be tough for WVU to compete. But this year is an anomoly, it's wide open, and they have more coming back than most, especially at the key positions.

Here you go for those of you debating WVU this is one of the voters for the AP. Story is on the ESPN website.

By Jason Whitlock
Special to Page 2

1. West Virginia: Schedule, schedule, schedule. The Mountaineers play in the right conference, the Big East, and have a beautiful nonconference schedule: Marshall, Eastern Washington, Maryland, East Carolina and Mississippi State. Notice Virginia Tech, the only team to beat WVA last year, isn't on the schedule. But it's deeper than the cupcake schedule. Coach Rich Rodriquez's spread offense has the perfect quarterback in Pat White and a terrific running back in Steve Slaton. Get by Louisville, and the Mountaineers will be America's lone unbeaten when BCS bowl bids get handed out.

2. Notre Dame: This is really a crazy pick. The Irish play a rugged schedule -- heck, they could lose the opener at Georgia Tech. But there's much to like about Notre Dame beyond Charlie Weis, Brady Quinn, Jeff Samardzija, Darius Walker and the rest of ND's offense. I'm expecting ND's defense to improve significantly. It takes at least a year for players to fully grasp defensive coordinator Rick Minter's complex schemes. Led by ND's veteran secondary, I expect the Irish D to support Weis' offensive fireworks.

To be honest I would love to see WVU join us in Glendale. Would be a nice reunion. We could invite Major Harris and Tony Rice. Redo the last NC game we had in AZ!

if you notice i never mention georgia coming back, in any way. my point, which you missed, was that their defense is suspect and even a weak schedule can leave them with one or more losses. my reason for thinking it's suspect is that a hard nosed running team ran up some major points on them. you can't win every game on a fake punt anyways. please try to keep on track with the argument.

O right, they have a suspect defense and USC, Ohio St and us don't? By the way they were ranked in the top 5 last year in most defensive categories, including overall. And the fact that Ga. came back and scored some points on them doesn't make them a suspect defense. And the reason they ran that fake punt was becuase of game planning, RR said in the press conference that they noticed that in watching films. Since when did game planning not become important?

if we played their schedule we'd have a top 10 defense.

bottomline is that their ranking is based solely on the fact that they could run table far easier than any other team in the top 10 and not on the talent on their roster, top to bottom.
