Wasn't it Jones that said, I will be committing to either Notre Dame or Texas-whoever offers first. It seems that things have changed a bit but it's nice to see Weis and Latina all over him and the offer going out.

Ben Martin is my favorite recruit of 07. Jones is a very close #2. I hope Charlie gets this kid. The early offer has to help.

Early enrollee means that it will count against the 2006 class too, right? Good to see that Weis is addressing the needs at DT NOW.

It can, but it doesn't have to. early enrollees can count against their current class or the previous class if there is room. There is room for one player to count agains the 06 class. I'd guess at least a couple will enroll early, but only one can count for this year. The benefit is getting a head start with spring practice.

Thanks scoop. Sounds like this kid is just ready to wrap up high school and get on to college. Gotta love these kids with drive and ambition to get to the next level ASAP.

this kid really built up nd in there. texas was just kind of a "well i could win there" type of school. it seems like he knows which school would actually sculpt him into a man. weis & co. would really have to drop the ball to lose this guy.

The way Jones talks has to make you feel good, and it would be nice to steal one from Texas.

Since DT is our #1 priority next year, it would be great to get an early enrollee at that position. It looks like Jones has the size to play immediately, but an extra semester to work on schemes and hit the weights could help a great deal. We'll need a number of underclassmen to contribute on the DL in '07, and I think our overall defensive performance will be important since we'll be losing a lot of our experienced offensive talent after '06.

For Jones, Only Timing A Surprise
Pete Sampson

When Notre Dame assistant coach Jappy Oliver stopped by Andress High School late last month, Andre Jones figured the visit was just the first step in a long process leading up to an Irish offer. The defensive tackle knew Notre Dame planned to visit again during spring practice, and that's when the 6-foot-4, 305-pound standout figured the Irish would come through with a scholarship.

Notre Dame decided to fast forward that schedule, offering Jones in the past two weeks.

"Oh yeah, I was surprised," Jones said. "I was walking through to class when the bell rang and my coach called me over. He said he wanted me to call a coach and gave me the number. I didn't even know who I was calling."

Jones quickly recognized Oliver on the other end of the line, and the Irish defensive line coach then passed the phone to Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis. Weis told Jones the Irish were very interested in offering the defensive tackle. A few days later a written offer from Notre Dame arrived in the mail.

"I was excited to get the offer, but at the same time I know I still have to keep working," Jones said.

Three weeks ago Jones held offers from only UTEP and New Mexico State. Since then Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Northwestern have all extended scholarships in addition to Notre Dame. Texas, LSU and Nebraska have all made trips to Andress.

It's not that Jones didn't expect Notre Dame to eventually offer him. He ranks among the nation's Top 100 juniors according to Rivals.com and plans to graduate high school in December, meaning he could help fill Notre Dame's biggest recruiting need a few months early. Aside from Jones' athletic qualifications, much of his extended family resides in the Indianapolis, Ind., area, meaning there's a personal link to the Midwest.

However, Jones didn't expect an Irish offer this soon, although the defensive tackle's desire to commit early probably increased the scholarship's speed. Last month the El Paso, Texas product said that if Notre Dame, Texas or Texas A&M made early offers (his top three schools), a commitment might come within a week.

With two of those offers in hand and a Texas junior day visit scheduled for Feb. 25, Jones now plans to take a more measured approach. He wants to visit Notre Dame this summer followed by taking a few official visits in early fall. Look for Jones to wrap up recruiting during the middle of his senior year.

Expect Notre Dame to be under consideration until the very end. It wasn't hard for the Irish coaches to get their point across to Jones that the program needs help at defensive tackle in a hurry.

"Coming in early, I think I could mature a lot going through spring ball and everything," Jones said. "I could help the team out looking at the depth chart."

I'm still interested in seeing his test results and his GPA.

If he has on offer, I think he's a safe option at this point.

He's also looking to enroll early, so that should tip us off that his books are in order if he can graduate a semester early.

This kid and Ben Martin are my 1a and 1b favorites this year. I was hoping he'd stick to that quick decision once he got the offer, but in reality it is a better thing for him to take the visits and make an informed decision. Things really look good, though.

I would agree.
