Without Brady QUinn as NDs QB, we would have been probably 8-4 (losing to MSU and UCLA) looking at some crappy bowl. with him we are 10-2 and headed to a BCS. No player means more to their team than Brady QUinn and it is shameful that he didnt even make second place.

Its the "I hate Notre Dame" vote out there. No doubt about it.

I don't think we would have beaten Georgia Tech and maybe not even Penn State either.

If you tell/show me a player that was more valuable to his team. I'll buy you a beer.

The individual awards are a joke. Everyone has an agenda. it was nice for BQ to get the Unitas & Maxwell though. By the year after next, no one will remember or care. Paging Jason White....

yeah what can you do, congrats to the winner but I must say an award that goes to a player that shouldn't have even been rightfully on the field two years in a row isn't much of an award IMO...

guys honestly...
quinn completes about 50% of his passes and has closer to a 2/1 td/int ratio against the teams that actually matter
he's a good quarterback, and he has the size/strength for the NFL - but this is college

I read so many people posting "without quinn, we wouldn't have won the MSU game"
Because of quinn we almost lost that game

Without BQ this year, it'd be more like 7-5. He will be missed next year.

Ummm....OK...

I believe what you meant to say is that "because of our defense (secondary especially) and our lack of a running game we almost lost that game."

Even ESPN (gasp) lauded Quinn's performance in that game.

I think he might have been in charge of payroll at the dealership that Bomar was "working" at.

the boys at abc and espn have mucho pull and made everyone believe the Smith was the best thing going in college football this year. Tells me that those who vote don't watch the games, they just listen to what is being spewed at them.

Smith was good this year, but not great enough to win by that large of a margin, by no means was he that good. You said it LMI, 2nd largest margin in history?

I'm sure those Southern voters (read: SEC) voted McFadden either first or second place, ensuring that Quinn finished third. Didn't 50 year old Chris Weinke win the Heisman too?

Third place was a real slap in the face (no offense John L). The Heisman is no longer about the best college player. It's about the best player on the best team who gets the most media attention and creates style points with the voters. How can Quinn get the Maxwell, and they Unitas and not come within 1200 points of the Heisman? What's up with that?

I've lost all respect for the Heisman. Don't mean nothing anymore.

I think the award needs to be better defined, is it the best player in the country? or the best player on the best team?

I cannot agree more with you all that quinn has saved ND this year at least 2-3 games with his performances but he did also have bad game against michigan which hurt his chances.

It great to see him get he Maxwell and it will be nice to see him hopefully get a nice pay check come draft day.

Well... it is the "outstanding" college football player, i.e. the guy that stands out the most. I think it's pretty well defined. That definition just didn't work out Quinn's way. Yeah, he's probably the best QB, possibly the best player in college and a possible #1 draft pick. But being the best player on the undefeated title-favorite best team in the land, and being THE senior leadership is pretty out-standing. just saying.

He's not the only one. Over the last two decades, the quarterbacks who won the Heisman have been very weak choices. A sure sign that the spirit and intention of the award had lost it's meaning.

1986 - Vinny Testaverde - Miami
1989 - Andre Ware - Houston
1990 - Ty Detmer - BYU
1992 - Gino Torretta - Miami
1993 - Charlie Ward - FSU
1996 - Danny Wuerffel - Florida
2000 - Chris Weinke - FSU
2001 - Eric Crouch - Nebraska
2002 - Carson Palmer - USC
2003 - Jason White - Oklahoma
2004 - Matt Leinart - USC

Only Vinnie, Ty, and Carson have proved to be able to compete at the NFL level.
Probably Matt too, although it's too early to be certain.

That's why the Heisman is a college award. Just because those guys didn't make it in the pros doesn't mean they didn't deserve the award in college. That's one of the things that makes the Heisman great, you don't have to be the best pro prospect to win the award.

Heisman = "Most Outstanding College Football Player" (Whatever that means)
NFL draft, Rounds 1 & 2 = Most Outstanding College Football Players according to team need.
NFL draft, Rounds 3,4,5, etc. Best College Football Players available.

Yes it's a college award. But it HAD been a great predictor of NFL potential.
Not anymore. At least from the QB position.
The award has lost it's original meaning. The only Heisamn award winner that played on losing team was Paul Hornung.
That will never happen again, even if it should.

I still don't understand why everyone is so upset that he got 3rd place. I mean, we all knew going into the night that he was not going to win it, so why does it matter if he got 2nd or 3rd place? It's only the runner-up to the heisman trophy, not the trophy itself. I would be extremely surprised if either of those two other players have better NFL careers than Brady Quinn, and in my opinion, thats all that matters. Who cares about being the runner-up for the hardware?

Oh lets get over the everyone hates ND garbage...

No doubt Smith wins the Heisman, its how the Heisman works, as for McFadden beating out Quinn....ND is in better shape without Quinn than Arkansas is without McFadden, he was their whole team...of the two starting offenses, who do you think has more draft picks the next two years.

What? I dont think it was Quinn that let MSU jump out to a 17-0 lead on trick plays and constantly being out of postion.

Individual awards are total crap.

I knew he'd finish third because idiots like Mark May put Timmy Chang, I mean Colt Brennan, in their top 3 on their ballots.

Notre Dame bias swings both ways and it exists, good and bad.

I don't have an issue with Smith winning the award; we all knew it was going to happen. BQ finishing 3rd is a joke, but that doesn't really matter much. No one ever remembers who finished 2nd anyway. If you don't win, the rest is irrelevant.

What I couldn't stand in the coverage of the award is all the praise heaped on Smith for becoming such a great guy and model student-athlete over the past 2 years. Sure it's great that Smith hasn't had anymore problems during the past couple seasons. There is certainly a feel-good story in all of this that's worth hearing. But instead of lauding Smith with praise for changing and no longer being a complete idiot, how about spending some time praising the guy who for the past 10+ years has continually been a model student-athlete.

Like everyone else, I like to hear someone has changed their life around after problems. But, I like even more to know about those guys who haven't succumb to the temptation of big-time athletics and the trappings that it brings.

With all of the negativity that comes from college football and the issues that continually plague the sport, it would be nice to see a bone thrown to those student-athletes who uphold the integrity we all preach about. The media is so quick to condemn these young men when they screw up. It's a shame they don't quickly highlight those who don't.

Again, I'm not saying BQ should have won the award, but he certainly deserved a few extra votes for being over the past 4 years the "Most Outstanding College Football Player" who represents the kind of student athlete I think we all would like to see more of.

i second your opinion. the best college player there was the kid from arkansas. if they truely voted for what the award was meant for, the running back/wr/qb would have won.
