After studying the depth chart I hope we keep the following 4

1.Fox
2.Carlo
3.Watt
4.Zach Martin ( I know many of you think I am crazy on this one but given the gap in our depth chart from upperclassmen to underclassmen and losing Prestwood and Carrico we have a need big time at LT and I think Zach wants to hold the crystal football with the rest of the team in 13!)

Cierre as well.

Tough to gauge all this right now. Once the season is over, draft grades come out, etc., we can have a better feel. I'd say if Wood, Martin, and Watt want to come back, definitely take them. And one of Fox and Calabrese, possibly both once the new class of guys starts taking a more solid form.

I would LOVE to have Cierre! Time will tell on this one though. I see him having some monster games this year and leaving. On the other side I see him as a later round pick given where RB's are taken now. Also, I remember him not having a sr poster (fathead) like some of the other Sr's and him commenting about it(wonder if staff had 5th yr plans already). I hope you guys are right on him!

Oh, I don't think you are crazy at all, Irishman. I definitely want Martin and Watt back. Not a lot of experienced depth behind them.

Watt is a bigger need than Martin. We'll be really thin at the interior line spots if Watt goes, although it helps that Lombard can move to guard if necessary.

Anyway, I'd like to redshirt as many of our 5 incoming guys as we can. You really like your OL to gain strength before you have to use them. Martin and Watt coming back would help

Absolutely Cierre if he wants to. Watt seems likely. Probably one of Carlo/Fox. Right now I'd say Fox, but it kind of depends on how the season goes and who develops underneath them.

Is Zach Martin a first-three-rounds pick? (I have no idea) If not, wouldn't be better served staying? Given his brother on the team, the rare chance to be a two-year captain and the recent trend of borderline guys staying another year, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him back.

Slaughter can't get a sixth, can he?

Those four guys plus cierre seems about right. I think there is little chance Martin goes pro after this year. He is too short for tackle in the NFL and so would be forced to play guard. Last draft there was a huge amount of guards picked in the first round and that was only two. I figure he will be projected to be a third or fourth round pick at highest and he will return. You don't see too many linemen who aren't projected to be elite linemen in the nfl enter the draft if they still have a year or two of eligibility left and don't need the money.

What does that put the magic number for recruits at

I thought that I read an article recently that there was 13 seniors that lose eligibility after this season and w/ the Prestwood, Cam Roberson, et al coming off the list that the scholarship availability would be at 28. So with it looking more than likely that either 4 or 5 getting a 5th year, that should leave the Irish w/ 23-24 openings for new recruits.

Yeah, that's right. 4 fifth-years = 24 openings (i.e. 4 more, since we already have 20 verbals).
5 fifth-years = 23 openings (i.e. three more).

Wood (if he wants to come back)
Watt
Martin
Only one of Fox and Calabrese (I doubt both get asked back)... honestly though, I think we would be fine if neither came back, but we would be better if one of them came back (I prefer Fox right now)

I still think either Martin or Watt will have a good enough ranking to enter the draft. I think it is unlikely that we keep them both.

Wood hurt himself with the 2 suspensions (his stats will drop)... I would say (right now) Wood will be back next season. If he goes off and gets like 5-6 BIG games, that could change.

When do 5th year guys get notified on their status?

Before Signing Day or after?

Yes... J/K. Sometimes before, sometimes after depending on the numbers and situation. Not sure, but believe Goodman got the early nod last year, while others didn't find out till after.

I pick Fox. At the expense of Carlo's "people" coming after me, Fox is a more complete player, and has surprised me actually. Cut your hair and have a Harrison Smith/ Eifert short hair final year.

I have to admit, Fox shocked the $#!+ out of me this year. Solid.

I think Kendall Moore can fill the void of Calabrese next season. He is primarily a run stuffer, very similar to Calabrese and has earned his chance to start.

My question is anyone else worried about LB in 2014 if Carlo and Fox come back next year and start at ILB. If so our 2013 LB looks is Shembo, Carlo, Fox and Spond as starters who will all be seniors. Which means that in 2014 we would be breaking in 4 new starters at LB. That scares me.

Ishaq has played extensively as a backup at CAT, Councell's role will grow next year so DOG is really not an issue, also not to mention in 2014, Jaylon Smith will be a sophomore, so I guess ILB would be the problem. IF Fox and Calabrese both come back, and IF they start as WILL and MIKE respectively, then there will be an issue, but even then, Jarrett Grace, someone both Kelly and Diaco have spoken highly of, will step in probably at MIKE, but the real battle will be at WILL, if Kendall Moore (if he returns for a 5th), Alex Anzalone, Anthony Rabasa or someone else, perhaps an incoming recruit challenges for the spot, that should be the only scary thing.

So really, the only problem with our 2014 LB core could potentially be at WILL, but with all the talent around and experience, there really shouldnt be much of an issue, IMO.

I agree about Ishaq but I call bullshit on the rest. We will basically have one rather experience player to plug in and 3 completely inexperienced but possibly talented players. I would rather break in 1 new starting ILB this year (say Grace) so that they year after we could have 1 returning starter, 1 really experienced new starter (Ishaq) and then 2 new starters with limited experience.

I'm thinking Fox returns, as I like the posts above stating that Calabrese can be replaced. I think we all believe that Wood is headed to a paycheck in the NFL. On the O-Line, I say we take both Watt and Martin. If one of either the Watt/Martin combo goes pro, then I believe the coaches sit and take the recruits for this year-however, if both leave, they could certainly be in a bind.

Yes, it would help out a lot more if Grace was to start next year. Breaking him in with 3 other experienced and talented seniors next season, will only help the 2014 LB core, as a year of experience will go along way in providing leadership and playing knowledge towards a new starter(s).

How much playing time have our underclass men had this year? Kelly has been great about rotating players in I thought.

Why wouldn't you see Fox and Calabrese rotating? (Grace is a werewolf, and will start for Manti.)

How do you pick one not the other, and maintain decent moralle?

Martin and Watt returning makes the other more likely to return.

Wood should return. He could use another year. But will he?

Fox should keep his hair the way he wants, and we don't need to comment on that shiit.

From what I have heard, and what my instincts tell me, we are looking at three more because of med scholarships, and other hardship waivers or transfers.
