Theft arrests for 3 incoming UCLA football players - College Football - Rivals.com

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Three incoming UCLA football players have been arrested on suspicion of felony theft, officials and public records said Saturday.

Joshua Shirley, Shaquille Richardson and Paul Richardson—all 18-year-old freshmen enrolled in the school’s summer session—were arrested on the UCLA campus Wednesday, booked at a Los Angeles County jail and released early Thursday morning, sheriff’s department records showed.

Shaquille Richardson and Paul Richardson posted $20,000 bail each and Shirley was released without posting bail, the records showed.

The three were arrested by UCLA police officers, sheriff’s spokeswoman Aura Sierra said Saturday.

A UCLA police watch commander said he had no immediate information on the arrests or the alleged crimes, and a UCLA athletics spokesman offered no details.

“We’re aware of the situation, we’re looking into it and we’ll have a comment at the appropriate time,” athletics spokesman Marc Dellins said.

Police and sheriff’s deputies did not know whether any of the men had hired attorneys.

The three men were all Southern California natives and regional stars for their local high schools last year.

Shirley, a linebacker from Kaiser High School in Fontana, was an especially coveted recruit who flirted with attending Southern California before signing on with coach Rick Neuheisel and the Bruins in February.

In January he recovered a blocked field-goal try and raced 77 yards for a touchdown to help give the West a victory over the East at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Shaquille Richardson was a cornerback who attended Los Alamitos High School and Paul Richardson was a wide receiver at Serra High School in Gardena.

my sources tell me, and they are VERY accurate in this case....these kids were stealing backpacks. The backpacks are given out to freshman and apparently have tracking devices on them. apparently there are witnesses to some of the thefts; got them on video, the whole nine yards - they are screwed

How much were we on Joshua Shirley radar?

We were very much on his radar. He always said he was very interested in ND, and that he was going to come out for a visit, but never set the definite date, so the ISD mods never thought we really had a shot unless he came out for an OV, which he never did, if I recall correctly. But his name was definitely on the minds of ND fans, sure.

BTW, the SC fans are going nuts over this. No lie, it's like they've forgotten all the arrests of their program and the steroids and the cheating, and they're acting like UCLA is Oregon for having this happen to them. My favorite line is from USCPlaybook.com (scout), when a fan had the nerve to say:

"If Shirley had come to SC, this wouldn't have happened. We don't have the players that do this type of stupid stuff."

The guy does have a point though: What kind of moron steals backpacks, when he could be "stealing" a house for his folks, free travel for his friends, and maybe even a fly, tricked out, retro car for himself?

Good for Slick Rick. Those guys would be enshrined at SC or FL.

And Josh Shirley was a highly sought-after recruit, so it wasn't like he kicked off some scrubs.

In the presser announcing his hiring, Rick said he had changed and grown up since his last coaching stint, and took full responsibility for his actions. It was a compelling, impressive press conference (if you want to see the EXACT opposite, google Lame Kiffin's presser at SC...oh my lord), but actions speak louder than words. When Rick was at UW, he would completely sweep these types of things under the rug, because the dude wanted to win above anything else, and admitted that. Kudos for him, IMO, for taking a stand here...
