Big because Irish reporters seemed to hint that they though he might shut it down sooner than later and that our only competition was Oklahoma for the most part.

This was always the most suspect Loy CB from that 8cb day to me. First of all, he had like three visits in three weeks lined up after the ND junior day, so it was just very clearly not over. It also happened right around the same time they were realizing Speca was fully gone, so it could have been a PR move that I do think Loy pulls from time to time.

From what I read and my take on it was the fact that he had been to ND several times on his own dime and apparently him and Young were really communicating. Just my take.

tbh i don't think he's a kid even if he came to ND folks would be too excited about. He's a smaller JD Bertrand, probably can only play Mike and has little flexibility

Pierce was pretty vocal about it being “the best visit ever” and stuff like that. It could be that Loy just based it in the kid’s enthusiasm

Singer says Pierce loved Laurinaitis, so I think MF²'s buddy going back to pOSU may hurt ND here.

He’s not a great loss anyway you don’t need him with Bowen and Zinter ahead of him

It's still about establishing the next cycle of players after them. You don't take a year off from recruiting one position because you liked the prospects you signed the previous year.

It applies to your example. The 2022 LB class was insane. But, it didn't stop Freeman from trying to match it with the 2023 LB class.

Payton Pierce may not be a Top 50 player, and we can say "no big deal, there are others to go after", but he's still a Top 150 caliber of player. If you are looking to build a championship roster, you don't turn away a player like Pierce unless you've already loaded up your class with a combination of quality & quantity, or that you need to use that scholarship in a different position.

He’s not a great loss anyway you don’t need him with Bowen and Zinter ahead of him

Loy says he doesn't like his pick for Pierce with Laurinaitis back to OSU
I think that CBs et al should be educated guesses early on and not only when it’s more of a done deal. To show somebody’s correct % when they’re jumping on the bandwagon is pretty worthless.

I like that Loy is typically the first CB. Yes he does take chances. That’s what I’m looking for. It’s a better indicator of a true educated guess and not just a confirmation.

That’s why they introduced a confidence meter to CBs a few years back. To show where each recruiting insider feels that the prospect is leaning without outright stating that it definitively that he’s committing there, 100%.

If I’m not mistaken, Loy issues the 6-8 range for his CBs.

6 - current leader and overall good shot of landing the player
7 - leader with a commitment date announced
8 - silent commit

I could be wrong here on one of these, though.

This is gonna be another battle. Unfortunately we don’t win many against OU.

MF needs to figure out who the new LB coach/GA is gonna be first and then get pierce back on campus in spring

I mean, if a grad assistant leaving is having as much of an effect as is being reported, probably means that the kid was never going to wind up at ND anyways

JL was the defacto LB coach though much like Tommy was the QB coach even when his title was GA
