You are allowed to play in 5 and still redshirt

It's a four game maximum, with any additional games being played in the playoffs/bowls not counting.

Onye played in five regular season games this past season. He can't redshirt. He also already used his redshirt when he enrolled for the '21-'22 season.

Unless... The NCAA implements the no-restrictions 5-years to play NCAA football rule later this year. Then he could get a 5th season.

I despise the red shirt year actually. I feel like you get 4 years and that's it. Especially with the portal where kids don't need to sit anymore. High school you get no redshirts I think college should be the same. I know I'm getting old and get off my lawn but still my feeling towards it

ISD - on campus and with team. But that doesn't mean he'll be on team in fall.

So really nothing new since we knew he was in directory.

I think this is a "you have a spot if you want it...but you need to earn your way back onto the squad" types of situations.

I think the staff is there for Onye and will do everything they can to support him, but it's ultimately up to him to decide if he wants to be with the team on Saturdays - and until that happens, they're treating things as if he won't be.

Given the NCAA's penchant for avoiding trouble, he could petition and probably get another year.

Not sure what all the hoopla is. Unless this site is wrong, he's only burned two of his 3 years of eligibility to date so clearly has 2 years remaining (again, unless I or this site is missing something?): https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/jason-onye-2.html
He was a freshman in 21 (didn’t play) so he’s already used a redshirt year. If he could claim a medical for 24 maybe that’d get him another but he played in five regular season games. So under the “five years to play four” rule he’d be out of eligibility after 25.

But yes maybe this is all moot when they say guys can just play college ball forever.

Ok so yes, then that sports ref site (usually pretty reliable) is missing his 2021 season. And then yes, it makes sense that he has Year 5 remaining and that's it, short of some medical exemption for a 6th year.

Hope he's been staying in condition. Takes a while to get reacclimated when you sit out a year.
