Angeli was their first and basically only functional qb offer since the other ones in that cycle were meaninglessly late. Must be something that really caught Reese’s eye. He also played in a predominantly run offense so high school highlights weren’t exciting.

I get the impression that Angeli has a strong head on his shoulders and I’ve read his football knowledge is also top notch. He’s got decent athleticism, is very accurate and also a solid arm as an early freshman. If he has excellent receivers, RBs and OL then he had a good chance to excel. I think he‘s more than a “game manager”. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong but I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do with the supporting cast that is being assembled.

Was Angeli someone who didn’t do the camp circuit and so that didn’t help his rankings?

I wish folks wouldn’t so quickly write Steve Angeli off as a nobody and that he should be an afterthought. He’s barely been on campus for a few months. It seems like it would be wise to see how he progresses over the next year or so, I think he’s got more in his tank than many are giving him credit for. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t pursue and get the best possible option for 2023.
19/20 QBs ranked where he was end up not very good. I just did that calculation over a Sunday beer so it’s not reliable. But that’s where people are coming from. Odds are he isn’t going to be taking us to the next level. Def hope to be wrong.

Rees probably liked his persoanlutly then just built his impression around that. I think Rees is a horrendous recruiter. But I like him and he is okay at offensive coordinator according to people who go know the game better than me.

The 2 ways to have a championship caliber team are 1. Have the most talent with steady QB play (see Bama and UGA recently) or 2. Have ~top 10 talent and elite QB play (See Clemson & LSU recently). Unless ND is able to sign consistent top 5 classes, elite QB play will be the mostly likely way ND wins a championship.

A guy like Angeli basically has a similar ceiling to Ian Book, which isn’t goin to get you over the hump if you aren’t signing consecutive top 5 classes. After 5 consecutive 10 win seasons, it’s fair for ND fans to target what is needed to get the program to the next level.

IMO you need to sign a top 15 QB even in years after a 5 star. Hit rate on elite qb prospects is too low to take an “off year” on a safe kid with limited upside. Angeli was really like the ~40th best QB in the class if you look at just Rivals and 247. ESPN pumped up his ranking because he was in the UA game, skewing the composite.

To be fair to Rees, Angeli had a bunch of big time offers early in the cycle. Appears to me that he didn’t develop the physical tools that many expected as a junior or senior. Very similar to Pyne … lucky us.

When I watch the YouTube highlights of all ND TDS last year I am left thinking 17 was pretty ducking good once the oline was in order. We might need to get into the QB transfer world again.

Only going off what IB says. They don’t think he has elite skills nor a high upside based on their evaluation. I think that fits closely with the national evaluations. But Singer apparently likes him for not elaborated on reasons if that makes a difference.
Please don’t go off only what IB says - ever! Think for yourself.

Soup Nazi has his own biases too.

His accuracy when making the right pre read and quick decisions was off the chart

You really need ability to at least extend plays if not run to be an elite offense

Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner!

Either bein an ND QB is now only a strong proposition to self-serving ND fans OR Rees sucks at recruiting and evaluation in building his QB room. Not good! But hey, Carrs will be happy.

I believe ND should have both Moore level player in this cycle. Rees kept all-in and got burned (some of which he is responsible) and now it’s a shit show.

Committed to Ohio State. 4-star walking into a QB room with two other 5-stars and another 5-star behind him in 2024.

Meanwhile, we still don’t have a QB in the 2023 class. Our projected classes are really solid compared to the last few years, but at times like these I still worry that we’re not exactly close to closing the talent and skill gap of the Bamas and OSUs.

I’ve been told you can only recruit an elite QB every few years, so this is quite confusing.

Rickie Collins just decommitted from Purdue. Purdue fans claiming he wants a bigger NIL deal than Purdue can offer. Regardless, keeping a 4 star QB from LA would have been an incredibly difficult pull.

Nothing makes for a great business model like alienating 95 of the other teams

If every other team doesn’t hate you it probably means you are an average team. I tend to hate Bama, OSU, Georgia.

I’m just curious what is going to happen on ND message board if BK actually succeeds at LSU?
He won’t in year 1 because their roster fell apart the past year, but after that?

I think he’ll go 10-2/9-3 every year with the occasional 11-1 season sprinkled in.

Are we even certain BK will be there more than 3 years or so?
