Significant. And impressive. Stop and think about it though. Bonner had the press, as did Cage. But nobody gave JWilliams a snowball's chance, and many speculated that Kolin Hill was the wrong guy for a BVG defense! Sounds like these freshmen are thriving!

Agreed, fantastic news. I'm just surprised that Trumbetti is not in that list! I think he'll get some playing time this year for sure.

See this is where it becomes difficult.

Context is king!

I think Trumbetti and Matuska were already in line, but I may be wrong.

Collinsworth just became the most important man on the team. If he goes down we are screwed! What about Baratti? Get Riggs up to speed pronto....we cannot go another year of a scared soccer player running away from contact again!!!

I'm very happy Schmidt is working his tail off, but I wish Doug Randolph would have challenged for starting MLB.

Agreed, I don't think Kelly is categorizing Trumbetti as a freshman. A lot of these freshman are goin to be situational players. Trumbetti is pushing for an every down player.

BGI's 8 standout freshman.

Watkins
Luatua
Bonner
Hill
Newsome
Weishar
Mokwuah
Bars

Of note Hill was at DE not sure if for all of practice or just a portion. They said he was pushing people around. Also Mokwuah moved much better than the first day. They note he'll be a guy we talk about next year.

Some things I really liked from today's practice :

Slots looked excellent, CJ and AC!

All things being equal, can you imagine Tyler Luatua leading Greg Bryant on a running play?

From the little we have seen this year, it looks like the defensive linemen are producing at many times the rate of any previous year I can remember. Ishaq, Romeo, and Sheldon, all look great. Trumbetti looks awesome and not much of a drop off. Can't wait to see opposing qb's on the hot seat.

Man, some of those tackles make me nervous. I don't like the finishing tackle on Chris Brown or Bryant on a couple of those. Perfectly legal, but IMO just not worth it in practice.

Players are fighting for spots and coaches want to see them live, so I get it, I just hope we make it to Rice without anything serious.

Really surprised that Deeb isn't a bigger part of the conversation. Physically I think he looks great. Randolph as well. From a big picture perspective there are a lot of big ATH's on defense that hopefully we can utilize in the coming year/s

Bryant will be "the guy"

Not so sure. Kelly in his press conference really alluded to the leadership of McDaniel, and his skills, patience running the ball and setting up the blockers. Made it really clear he wanted to see more from Folston and Bryant. And he was specific.

I am thinking this season Kelly my put the leadership up front over the talent, and not have "the guy." May work out best for the youngsters as well as McDaniel. Cam doesn't loose all the reps, and the young guys are managed and taught so as they can bring it to a new level.

Kelly said very recently, get used to "a lot" of guys playing on defense. I get that his body language meant that would be some exceptional number.

Leadership is fantastic, but 80 yd td's and 7 broken tackles per carry trump that stuff.

Interesting that they lined up Ishaq at DT for those pass rushing drills twice. I wonder if that is giving him some practice for a sub package where we'll see him rushing from inside with guys like Jhonny/Trumbetti etc on the outside. Those drill are not meant to make OL looked good and there wasn't a tremendous amount of skill set being used by the young DL but the explosiveness of Hayes, Bonner, Trumbetti, and Jhonny is apparent. Hayes just completely walked back Elmer. Physically I like how he looks but isn't getting a lot of attention. It'll be interesting to see how the WR competition works out because Procise looks good and when adding him to the mix it's a battle for spots that will be fun to watch.

Another interesting note is with Hegarty out Hanratty ran with the ones at LG versus moving Elmer back there and putting McGlinchey at RT. For now it sounds like McGlinchey won't be in that starting lineup. I'm a little surprised by that, especially considering Kelly's comments about Elmer moving like a guard at Tackle.

Assuming a returning starter doesn't lose his spot, this will keep either McGlinchey or Nelson off the field until 2016, no?

Nelson could play guard. A lot of scouts believed his best position is guard coming out if high school. Personally would want him at RT

I don't get this. We have two running backs that ND has not seen in a long time and he is going to play Rudy over them? Cam has surprised me so far and I appreciate what he has done but two SEC running backs are waiting and should get most of the carries.
