Day three practice note on RJ

Notre Dame's Robert Blanton has looked good at times, but he continues to be too physical in coverage and will not get away with that at the next level.

He's just a physical DB. For him to make it in the NFL he will have to be a safety IMO.

From what I've seen this year in the NFL he won't play unless he is physical in coverage.

Harrison Smith is doing well at the Senior Bowl...could be solidifying his second round grade.

Notre Dame S Harrison Smith has looked good. It's sometimes hard to get a good read on safeties in all-star practices because tackling is limited, but Smith is competing hard and putting himself in the right spots. He could clean up his angles to the point when the ball is in the air, but overall Smith is helping himself this week.

I think he means because of the five yard rule in the NFL. Guys in pass coverage can't hit receivers after five yards; in college, as long as you don't hold, you can bump until the ball is in the air.

NFL mocks.com has Harrison Smith rated as a 10th best player at the senior bowl.

Top 10 Prospects at the 2012 Senior Bowl - NFL Mocks - Covering the 2012 NFL draft, Mock Draft Database, Scouting Reports, and Fantasy Football

Mike Mayock is the color commentator for Notre Dame football on NBC during the college season, so if you’re wondering who gets the best look at the Golden Domers, it’s Mayock. If you don’t trust his opinion by now, you might want to discard this final inclusion, but Mayock says he has heard second round grades on the versatile Smith, and even some first round grades. That’s high praise for a guy who lacks elite athleticism. Smith is a throwback, but he prides himself on making smart plays and being in the right place at the right time.

Personally don't think they are giving him enough credit for his athleticism. but, this is another example of him having a good week of practice.

I know it has been awhile since Smith was in high school but I believe he won the decathlon or triathlon. So I would say he has pretty good athleticism.

I think he can be pretty good at the next level in the right situation.

ND DB R. Blanton lacks movement skills. But i like his instincts, range and toughness. Maybe better suited as a DS but a solid fb player

I completely agree with his assesment. if I was a team I would draft RJ in the 6th round.

BTW Harrison Smith has been rated by all sites as a top 10 participial from the senior bowl roster.

Edit: ESPN Scout Inc gave Smith a grade of 85 and is the number 40th prospect overall. To all you doubters, kid will be picked in the second round.
