2006 Big Game - Penn State

I was looking at the 2006 schedule and I saw that ND faces Penn State on Sept 9th in South Bend. Both these team will be rated in the TOP 5 in the preseason poll and may finish #3 and #4 this year.

Another unrelated interesting point, if ND wins out, the loss to Michigan State will basically be almost irrelevant in the long term for final ratings in 2005/06 season. Reasoning - If they do win all of their remaining games, I think they will finish either #3 or #4. If they didn't lose to MSU - and win out - they may of had a chance to sneak into #2 ahead of the loser of the NC game but probably finish #3. That being said, we should have not lost.

That MSU game really pisses me off. The defense got shreaded.

I compare it to the Purdue game of 2004...no one in the world could have beaten them that day.

What is also sad is that I was one of the last people to see ND beat MSU at home. It was 1993, my sophomore year in high school on my dad's 44th birthday and Jim Miller was QB for MSU.

That's an eternity ago.

Jiggs, if you look at what MSU has done since the ND game it is hard to believe they could beat anybody, but on that day they were sky high.

I also believe it was a game that established Quinn as the team leader. He brought them back--just couldn't pull it off.

The defense did enough in the MSU game to win. It's a team game. Schwapp's fumble cost ND a score. And the Defense didn't give up the 7 from the Quinn INT for TD. Those two offensive plays resulted in a 14 point swing. Without either one major offensive gaff, ND wins in regulation. "First, do no harm!"

As for PU, I recall miserable Special Teams play for what 95 or 100 yd kickoff score. A TD on a pass play for the corner went for the pick, missed and PU get a 80 yd TD. PU had a couple of big plays which turned the game. They made a couple of key plays for long yardage. They made those plays ND didn't. But they didn't dominate the game, they were far from unbeatable.

Both games were winnable with better execution, and one was coached by Ty and the other Charlie. In his recent press conference Charlie stressed the point that poor coaching lost the MSU game.

The day ND played SC, I watched Ohio State return a blocked FG against MSU as the first half ended. They haven't been the same since.

They lost to scUM again very close, Northwestern gave them the mother of all ass kickings and they've completely fallen off the map.

ND had better win the next two in this series. John L. Smith is a bit of a jerk in my opinion and that whole flag thing really burns me...still.

I will be soooooooo glad to finally have PSU back on the schedule next year. I live in PA and I'm so tired of all the comparisons to ND every year. There is only 1 comparison to make each year and that is how the teams play against each other and not each other's opponents. Lastly, I will definitely be breaking the '92 game out of the archive to watch Jerome and Reggie B pull off the comeback again. Go Irish !!

Kevin McDougal's only bad game in his career. That game kinda reminds me of this years Tenn. game.

I'll give you the second half of the MSU game, BGIF, but not the first. They looked HORRIBLE on defense for the first 30 minutes

Purdue got every break in that game. They were hot. If ND played them after the Wisconsin game, they might have won even with TW.

Purdue was rolling until Orton's fumble against Wisconsin. Again, one play turned the tide of a whole season. MSU's was the blocked FG. All of the sudden, the bottom fell out on them. Orton and Stanton were Heisman candidates after leaving South Bend.

To me, this is coaching. Why did these guys tank? The staff couldn't hold it together. I'll give ND credit for rebounding off of the MSU and SC losses.

You can say that the defense played well enough to win but they gave up 44 points!!! You're not going to win many that way.

that also was the third game of the season for this defense and they did what they had to the second half.
offensive turnovers hurt just as much

take the same michigan state team that day and play it over and I don't think they will score quite as much today even with the interception for a TD.
not because of their inability any longer on offense, but our defense is better today.

*a bit* of a jerk? that's the understatement of the day. i live an hour north of lansing, and we get an earful from john l. here's a guy that wears a hawaiian shirt after the hawaii game to taunt their head coach. he suspends his rb (teague) for ONE GAME following his third brush with the law - an assault charge that followed separate charges of drug possession and drunk driving - and instead of throwing him off the team, he reinstates him for the ND game. he shrugs off criticisms of lack of team control with the flag incident as "game emotions." he publicly mocks his kicker at a press conference. he blames his assistant coaches in a loss to ohio state with a rant that would have had most security officers nervously clutching their pepper spray.

i don't pull the trigger on a guy's character too often, but john l. smith is a DICK through and through.

i can stomach getting beat by a team like so cal. msu is public enemy #1 next year.
