Notre Dame expanded its recruiting board in the class of 2020 on Friday when an offer was extended to Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy defensive back Lejond Cavazos.

Cavazos, who already holds offers from Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma and other big time programs, said he was thrilled to add Notre Dame to that list.

“It was an awesome feeling,” Cavazos said of the offer. “Especially coming from Coach (Todd) Lyght himself.”

The IMG product said he’s plenty familiar with Lyght’s resume, and is more than excited to have the opportunity to potentially play for him in the future.

“I know for a fact he’s a great coach and even better person,” Cavazos said of Lyght. “And will get me where I need to be, not only in football but life after that.”

During the trip, Cavazos obviously got to attend Notre Dame’s 24-17 victory over Navy. The Texan-turned-Floridian said despite the rain and cold, it was still a great visit.

“It was great,” Cavazos said. “Aside from the rain, I loved it,”

Even with the rain, the Notre Dame fans still showed up for the game, and Cavazos said that speaks volumes about how big of a deal Irish football is to its fans.

“The fact that it was rainy and cold and the atmosphere was still really great,” Cavazos said. “That shows a lot.”

Going forward Cavazos will undoubtedly be one of the more highly recruited defensive backs in the class of 2020.

Several big-time programs have already jumped in the mix to eventually land his signature come National Signing Day 2020.

Now Notre Dame is one of those teams, and Cavazos said the Irish will be squarely in the mix right up to the moment when he signs on the dotted line in February of 2020.

“It’s a school I’m going to take very seriously in my recruiting process,” Cavazos said of Notre Dame. “A definite top five.”
