I'll be honest, I don't understand our scholarship situation for next year at all.

I really don't care myself. It doesn't matter what any of us think or fret over, BK and staff have a plan. They just don't bother to share with us like they should. lol

last year... not bad.
42 catches 559 yards 13.3avg 7tds

would have been second in average and TDs

there appears to be a handful of guys that will be taking their talents or lack there of to other places.....every year there seems to be a rb in the dog house and this year is no different..maybe the new coach can get them turned around but doesn't sound like it will matter...but i was told during fall camp last year, they are going to start encouraging those who they don't feel will be contributing to the team to explore their options...look for the mass exodus of those players following spring ball

I'm a little indifferent on this. He's a solid WR but he's very similar to what we already have in Claypool. If we were going to bring in a grad transfer WR I'd like to it be a guy that can stretch the field, I don't think Kumah does that. At this point, let's just get Alexander to coach up his damn group.

how does the transfer portal work? seems like they would have to be in earlier, or when they begin to explore options. Anyone know?

here's what i found. still not sure about the timing..

https://www.si.com/college-football/2019/ncaa-transfer-portal-rules-list

In 2018, the NCAA instituted a new rule allowing Division I athletes to add their names to a "transfer portal" without permission from the program.

Entering the NCAA transfer portal is a necessary first step for any athlete who wishes to transfer to another institution. Once an athlete decides to transfer and is added to the database, any coach can contact the athlete. The process is now in the hands of athletes–past situations where universities blocked talented players from leaving are no longer permissible. However, schools are now allowed to cancel the scholarships of players at the end of the semester in which they expressed their intent to transfer.

With the college football season over, many athletes will be adding their names to the NCAA transfer portal. Some players, like former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant, have already entered the portal and transferred, in this case to Missouri. Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts added his name on Wednesday. Ohio State’s Tate Martell and Oklahoma’s Austin Kendall followed suit.

Making big splashes in the transfer market could pay dividends, particularly at quarterback. For example, Washington State won 11 games last year behind the play of graduate transfer Gardner Minshew. The last two Heisman winners, Oklahoma quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, both transferred to the Sooners.

The transfer rules still require players to sit out for a full academic year before they can begin playing, but athletes can file for waivers on the basis of any number of possible exceptions, as several Ole Miss players successfully did last offseason in the wake of the school’s NCAA sanctions. Ohio State’s Justin Fields, the No. 2-ranked quarterback in the class of 2018, plans to seek immediate eligibility following his departure from Georgia, where he spent the 2018 season. However, players like Hurts and Minshew who have graduated from their original school but still have eligibility are allowed to play immediately.

Subtext of the mass exodus from Virginia Tech is that apparently the honeymoon is over for Fuente. Seems a lot like the Bill O'Brien situation at Penn State where replacing a legend is not easy... not really sure which side is being unreasonable, but when Fuente put his foot down early in the season about player discipline, rules, etc. it ruffled a lot of feathers. Beamer was your quintessential "players coach" that didn't give a crap about that stuff and instead babied players like Marcus Vick as much as he could because they could produce on the field.

Kumah is a quality player that believes he can raise his draft stock by playing in a more friendly offense. Smart decision, not sure he ultimately ends up at ND.

Isn't it safe to assume that a lot of freshman lack the correct attention to detail or focus. How many freshman come in with a real understanding of how to "work" at the collegiate level. If he was a junior I'd be worried.

Reading between lines with this and the German kid, it sounds like we're pretty darn confident the two LBS will get scholarship spots and we'll have one left over.

In all honesty, it depends on how it's done.

If it's an honest conversation talking about the unlikeliness of playing time in the future with no fear of repercussions to the player if he should choose to stay at ND and get his degree. If after that conversation, it is truly the player's choice, then I have no problems.

If the player is intimidated into transferring, that is a whole different ballgame.

I don't think it can ever be as bad as the SEC because IIRC the SEC only offers 1 year scholarships through the LOI, so a team could choose to just not renew the scholarship and then the player is forced to transfer or stay and pay out of pocket.

ND has 4 year scholarships, so we could tell a player it would be best for him to transfer if he wants to play or we can offer medical retirements to players who don't want to play anymore, but technically its a player's decision and he can't be forced off the team.

Now if we start seeing a ton more kids getting kicked off the team for reasons we don't hear about, then that might be them forcing kids out, but I don't think we are there yet.

I just don't see ND risking bad press forcing a kid out. Let's be honest, most kids want to play.

I have no problem with ND saying "at your stage, and based on your progression, we don't see you playing a substantial role in your position group". It's then in the player's court to stay or leave. Most of the kids in this situation could easily go to a lesser P5 or MAC type conference and play. If their priority is a ND degree, and they want to stay, then that's fine too.

Those guys are few and far between. If they are good, they're going to the NFL after their junior season or after they graduate.

just watched his 2017 highlights. great hands, fights well for the ball, not easy to take down. not a burner. feels like a little shorter, but a little faster than Boykin. Not sure, but I think Claypool is a little faster. as long as Austin is WR1, I have no problem with bringing him on if there is room. If they plan to play him in the place of faster youth, I'll pass.

also has 2 years of eligibility left.
