Reps, sir!
Day was the exception to the rule, because he was just so good.
Wasn't he recruited by Elston?
Interesting that so many bring up Sheldon in this conversation! First time I saw him was at the SC game pep rally in '11. He had been standing right in front of us (was talking on his cell and he was very excited about something,) which is what brought attention to him. As we paid attention to the rally, the crowd drifted and I was watching the stage, he turned abruptly and started to exit. We had one of those standoff's where our eyes met gaze, and we waited politely for the other to move. That is when I knew he was a good man. We both chuckled, his face lights up with his smile. It really shows! But at any rate, I am exactly 5'11". We had to measure me last night because one of my daughters friends swore her dad claimed the same but was shorter. Another 5'8", six foot wantabe.
So at any rate I recognized Sheldon, the little recruit tag they wear helped, but I was actually shocked. I barely looked up to him. I suppose he could be so broad he doesn't look his height, but man, I still can't convince myself he is close to 6'2". Buster, aren't you 6'2"? Go stand back to back with him and let me know. (Laughing.)
At any rate watching him in the crowd was a "sell" for me. Sheldon is the most light on his feet, athletic, big man I probably have ever seen. He obviously was all he was advertised weight wise, but he moved like a guy that was 180. And he was incredibly quick. Even from just watching him walk you could tell. His build is even more impressive. He more like Zack Martin is just thick everywhere. Really solidly put together.
All that for the punch line : I have heard that Elston and someone else were so sold on Day, (could have actually been Martin) that they lobbied Kelly directly over Diaco's objections. I don't think Diaco had anything against him except his height, but Diaco's initial reaction was pass, and that was changed from the top. Just what I have heard from a lot of people, which makes it a popular rumor, or a bit of the truth.
