When we spoke to 2013 offensive lineman Marcell Lazard (Bloomfield, N.J. /Bloomfield) last week, all he knew about Notre Dame was just what he had heard from other people. He had been told of the tradition and had heard Notre Dame had great facilities, but he really didn't know what to think until he could get up there and see it firsthand. He did that this past week and was awestruck.
“My trip up to Notre Dame’s camp went really good,” said Lazard. “I flew from New Jersey to Chicago and then we drove from Chicago to South Bend. Once we arrived on campus and saw how very nice it was, I was really impressed.”
The view wasn't the only thing that left an impression on the 6-foot-5, 285-pound prospect.
“As for the camp portion of it, I also thought that went really well,” said the Bloomfield star. “Basically, there weren’t a lot of people there, but there was some really good competition there. There were four offensive tackles in total there I believe, so we all got a lot of work in.”
The ‘work’ he did in camp definitely caught the attention of the Notre Dame hierarchy and earned him some personal time with Notre Dame's defensive coordinator when it was all said and done.
“After camp, I got a chance to talk to Coach (Bob) Diaco and he's going to be my recruiter,” said the New Jersey standout. “He just basically introduced me to all the coaches, including the offensive line coach (Ed Warinner). They said they were really interested in me and said by next year I should have an offer from them.”
That is an offer he is certainly looking forward to. As of now, he currently holds two offers from Buffalo and Connecticut, but is receiving plenty of attention from Boston College, Rutgers, Syracuse and Temple.
“Being able to see the campus at Notre Dame has really changed the way I look at them,” said Lazard. “They are now definitely one of my top schools at this point.”
