Played his best game tonight. Can't believe how badly he was being held all night .

James was ok this year but when he is the defensive player of the year you know your defense was bad.

Ain't that the truth. I remember looking at the captains from this year and seeing Onwualu, and most would assume he'd be the least productive of the group. Turns out, he was arguably the MOST productive of the group, and that's not a good thing.

Highlighting Every NFL Team's Best UDFA Signing | Bleacher Report

When a team identifies a problem area it couldn't address during the draft, multiple undrafted free agents are usually signed in an attempt to throw multiple talents at the problem. The Chargers lacked linebacker depth.

As a result, the organization signed three linebackers to undrafted free-agent contracts.

James Onwualu is the best of the bunch due to his natural upside, continual improvement and comfort level working in space. The 6'1", 232-pound linebacker led the Fighting Irish with 11.5 tackles for loss just three seasons after converting from wide receiver.

"I like him for what he is," an AFC scout told NFL.com's Lance Zierlein. "I think he'll be a really good special teams player with backup WILL linebacker ability. I don't think he's going to start, but he's got some cover talent so maybe he could be a factor there."

With Denzel Perryman and Jatavis Brown expected to start, the rest of the Chargers linebacker corps remains undecided in Gus Bradley's new scheme.

That summary is exactly how I pictured O's NFL career. If healthy, there's no reason that he can't be a special teams player for a number of years.

He would've been a perfect fit at Rover in an Elko defense.

Haven't been able to find anywhere if he made the Chargers roster. He is not shown on it, or practice squad, and is not mentioned as waived anywhere. . Anyone know?

Terrific good for them.. Good to see a lot of these grind it out as low picks or UDFA and making rosters/practice squads. James was always a guy i wanted to see succeed.

I counted the number of guys listed on the roster at Los Angeles Chargers and I counted 52. I guess they just left one person off the roster on the website. I'm assuming that Onwualu is still on the roster even after the waiver activity since he hasn't been mentioned being waived.

Awesome! Congrats James! He should be a core special teams player for years. Hopefully he sees the field as a OLB in passing sub packages.

The Los Angeles Chargers released James Onwualu with an injury settlement on Aug. 22.
