it kind of surprises me a bit is all?

It does surprise me as well.

I guess Weis really does mean it when he says the best players will play. This is a huge vote of confidence to Walls, obviously, and I hope he takes it and runs with it.

Exactly! Hoping the same from Anthony Vernaglia & Pat Kuntz. The Frosh potential at KR is pretty exciting too w/ AA & Golden! With Blanton, and guys like possibly Carlton Thomas in ND's future lookout.

I'm a big fan of Tate as well.

His raw speed is enough to get ANY Irish fan juiced!

many have been skeptical about our WR's for this season. Of all the depth chart, that part made me smile the most. I'm excited to see 3 guys with completely different talent and characteristics on the field at one time. It's going to be interesting. Go Irish!

Maybe another misdirection attempt by listing Sharpley as the first QB. Might be thinking Gailey or Tenuta will see this as a slip up and start expecting Evan as the starter.

Nice to see young OL getting into the two-deep. They must have had great camps, but any specifics on how polished Dever and Romine are compared to everyone else?

As I noted earlier, the UHND blog has a bunch of nice analysis:

Some Observations on the Official Depth Chart

Monday, August 27th, 2007
  • First thing that jumps out is Walls has taken over the starting left corner spot from Wooden. It’s really only been a matter of time before Walls was a starter.
  • No clues at the QB position as Weis has them listed in order of class.
  • 13 freshman are on the depth chart already – Jimmy Clausen, Robert Hughes, Armando Allen, Duval Kamara, Golden Tate, Mike Ragone, Matt Romine, Taylor Dever, Ian Williams, Kerry Neal, Brian Smith, Harrison Smith, and Brandon Walker.
  • In fact, only five freshman are NOT on the depth chart – Gary Gray, Andrew Nuss, Emeka Nwankwo, Steve Paskorz, and Aaron Nagel. Note: Gray would very likely be on the depth chart if it wasn’t for his hand injury.
  • 22 sophomores are listed giving Notre Dame 35 underclassmen on the depth chart.
  • On the flip side, just seven true seniors are on the depth chart – Junior Jabbie, Justin Brown, Maurice Crum, Anthony Vernaglia, Leo Ferrine, Terrail Lambert, and J.J. Jansen.
  • Armando Allen, James Aldridge, and Junior Jabbie are all listed as “Or” as the backup tailback which suggests all will get carries.
  • Notre Dame can actually fill out a 2 deep along the offensive line with capable players – it’s been a while since that’s happened. It’s also been a while since there hasn’t been players listed at multiple spots.
  • Of the six offensive linemen from last year’s class, only Chris Stewart and Bartley Webb are not on the depth chart.
  • Thomas Bemendefer, who just received his scholarship last week, is listed as the backup center.
  • Weis has 7 wide receivers listed which suggests he is comfortable playing all 7. That should be a very comforting thought to anyone who remembers the five “wide receiver” sets last year which had Carlson and Darius Walker as wide outs.
  • Will Yeatman is listed as the #2 tight not – not Konrad Reualnd like most speculated.
  • Kerry Neal and Brian Smith are both listed as the #2 OLB behind Anthony Vernaglia – I will be surprised if one of them isn’t starting by season’s end.
  • At the ILB spot next to Crum, Brockington and Toryan Smith are listed as co-starters.
  • Notre Dame is four deep at both safety positions – when was the last time that was the case?
  • The two man race for place kicker and kick-off duties has Ryan Burkhart as the odd man out right now. Nate Whitaker and Brandon Walker are listed as co-starters at both positions.
  • Armando Allen and Golden Tate listed as the top two kick returners – that should lead to a lot of excitement for Notre Dame fans.

And again:
Official Depth Chart Released, Walls Ahead of Wooden

Author: Frank Vitovitch | Filed Under Football, Latest Article, 2007 Season

August 28, 2007

(UHND.com) – Notre Dame released its official depth chart late Monday night with a surprise for Notre Dame fans – sophomore Darrin Walls is listed as the starter at the left corner position over fifth senior Ambrose Wooden. Monday’s release also illustrates very clearly the overall youth of this year’s squad with a total of 35 under classmen listed on the deep chart on offense and defense alone.

The youth movement on the 2007 Fighting Irish comes as no surprise, but the move of Walls ahead of Wooden does after the fifth year senior had been seen running with the first team defense during the media portion of the drills as well as during the open practice two weeks ago.

Weis has said from day one that the best player will start regardless of class or seniority and this latest move is a very clear indication that it’s not all talk. Wooden has 15 career starts under his belt including all 12 games of the 2005 season. The fifth year senior from Baltimore had lost his starting job to Terrail Lambert last year after being slowed by injuries, but many felt he had the starting corner spot all but locked up.

Walls, a true sophomore, saw the field early in 2006, but looked lost at times. In his first collegiate game, Walls found himself lined up one on one with Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech and to his credit he held his own. Where Walls struggled was in zone coverages and in playing the run, but it appears as though a year of working with Bill Lewis has prepared Walls for the starting role opposite Lambert.

Aside from the Walls-Wooden flip flop, the thing that stands out most about the depth chart is the massive number of freshmen and sophomore listed. Thirty-five different underclassmen have their names listed as players capable of getting on the field.
Amongst the year’s freshman class, only linebackers Aaron Nagel and Steve Paskorz, cornerback Gary Gray, and defensive linemen Emeka Nwankwo and Andrew Nuss find their names not listed.

One of the few positions that was still up in the air, the second outside linebacker spot, appears to have been won by Anthony Vernaglia who is listed alone as the starter. Meanwhile, at inside linebacker, it appears as Joe Brockington and Toryan Smith are still battling for the starting spot with both being listed as co-starters for now.

Youth in the Return Game

Armando Allen and Golden Tate are currently listed as the top two kick returners which should allow for some big plays in the return game this year. Both Allen and Tate have the kind of speed Notre Dame has been lacking and with kickoffs being pushed back to the 30 this year, having explosive return men could have a big impact on the outcome of games this year.

Wide Receivers Aplenty
The official depth chart lists seven different wide receivers which is a stark contrast to a year ago, when the wide receiver position was not over flowing with depth. David Grimes and George West are listed as the starters with DJ Hord and Duval Kamara backing up West and Robby Parris, Barry Gallup, and Golden Tate backing up Grimes. According to Weis, players listed on the depth chart are capable of playing in a game which would suggest that all seven of these wide receivers could see the field early.
Filling out the Offensive Line

Notre Dame completely fills out the two deep across the offensive line without having to list any player more than once. It’s been a while since Notre Dame had this kind of depth, albeit inexperienced, along the offensive line. The first unit consists of Paul Duncan and Sam Young at the tackles, Dan Wenger and Michaek Turkovich at the guards, and John Sullivan at center. The second unit has two freshmen, Taylor Dever and Matt Romine, at the tackles, Matt Carufel and Eric Olsen at the guards, and Thomas Bemendefer at center.

For now it looks like the Dever and Romine have passed sophomore Bartley Webb who along with Chris Stewart are the only sophomore offensive linemen not listed on the depth chart.

Safety Valves

The official depth chart lists eight different safeties – four at each position. Backing up Zibby at strong safety will be Ray Herring, Sergio Brown, and Leonard Gordon (in that order) while Kyle McCarthy, Jashaad Gaines, and Harrison Smith will backup David Bruton.

I have a feeling that any one of the RBs can break away for long runs over 30 yards we have missed the past 3 years

After this week's free-for-all there were a few changes to ND's depth chart, but nothing really major. Here's a rundown, in what I take to be approximate order of significance and/or surprisingness.
  • Dan Wenger's injury has him out for at least this week, with Matt Carufel starting in his place at RG and Chris Stewart as the backup.
  • Duval Kamara has moved ahead of D.J. Hord for the #2 "X" receiver spot, with George West still the #1. Grimes, Parris, Gallup, and Tate are listed in the "Z" spot, in that order. Sorry Tate fans, looks like you'll have to wait a bit longer.
  • Just like last week, Sam Young will be starting at LT rather than RT, with Taylor Dever as his backup. The Paul Duncan-Matt Romine combination is at RT, with Duncan still the #1, for now anyway. Mike Turkovic is still the starter at LG, with Eric Olsen behind him.
  • Derrell Hand is listed behind #1a Justin Brown and #1b Dwight Stephenson Jr. at RDE.
  • Kerry Neal is now the #2 LOLB. Morrice Richardson, who had been the #2 there, moves to ROLB, where Neal had been the co-#2, but Richardson is #3 behind Anthony Vernaglia and Brian Smith.
  • The depth chart now lists Travis Thomas, James Aldridge, Armando Allen, and Junior Jabbie as all tied for the #1 RB spot, with Robert Hughes behind them. In week one, Thomas was listed as the lone starter.
  • And of course, Jimmy Clausen is our #1 QB, with Evan Sharpley listed as his lone backup.
Everything else seems to be the same as it was in week one. Ben Ford has some more thoughts here - they are worth reading, as always.

Maurice Richardson had a sack though. That's more than I've seen out of the other lb's.
