Because as it stands right now, there appears to only be 1 quality Defensive Tackle available that is interested in ND, and some people feel he'll end up at Ohio State. As it stands right now, this is ND's top 4 at DT: Hughes Sevillano Mullins Mukam? Dixon? That's bad. Like, really bad. 0%...

Assuming they don't land anyone good in the portal at Defensive Tackle, then they clearly need to just buy some of the best ones available out of High School, right? I mean, what's the alternative?

I think the issue most people have is that Al Washington did an atrocious job of recruiting Defensive Tackles and the position is a mess. They need 2 quality starters at the position from the portal, because of how bad the depth chart is, and they've struck out so far. Without 2 legit guys...

Then just overpay for 1 year rentals. Their money is off the books in January (hopefully).

What's scary is if employ this same strategy next year. With all of the impact players they're losing, they're going to have to go big-game hunting and land some impact players from the portal.

John Brice had a conversation with an agent who is dumbfounded by ND's approach to the portal so far. He essentially told Brice that between what they have returning and the schedule they have, 2026 is set up for ND to run all the way to the CFP. They only have a few question marks (DT, K, WR)...

IF money is an issue, I wonder if they'll get 3-4 mediocre Defensive Tackles on the cheap and pray that 1-2 of them are average in 2026. Sort of like a Defensive Tackle room by committee.
