I finished Exodus (Leon Uris) the other day. Very good. The chapters about the holocaust were very tough to read. Some disturbing material.

It's been at least 20 years, but I remember really liking Exodus.

I've got two books for some upcoming travel: The Dream of Scipio by Iain Pears (the same guy who did An Instance of the Fingerpoast, truly exceptional) and The Leopard. I've been looking forward to these

The backstories of the characters experience in Europe and Russia have haunted me since finishing it a few weeks ago. Personalised the holocaust rather than it being this thing in textbooks.

Yeah, telling us the backstory and letting us understand why a character acts and reacts a certain way is so much better than just telling us they act a certain way. Makes them 3-dimensional with a lot of depth instead of just a 2-dimensional character that we don't really know.
