Who’s your top list of guys to replace Ash? If it was me i’d probally go.
1. See if Golden wants to come back.
2. Go get Bryant Haines from IU.
3. Andy Avalos TCU defensive coordinator has head coaching experience.
4. Jim Knowles? He was good at Ohio State.
5. Rob Aurich Nebraska DC having a good year, from Michigan young and upcoming coach and they have 22 sacks this year
Dave Aranda if he finally gets the boot at Baylor.

Throw a truckload of money at Jim Schwartz who is out of work right now.

I like Dave Aranda I think he could help on the recruiting trail a ton too. Mickens would be a good higher but might come with some growing pains. Hard pass on Schwartz I would prefer someone with some experience in the college ranks recently.

I said it after TAMU last year and I’ll say it again now.

ND’s program defining hire was seeing a young upstart becuase they saw his potential. They were willing to take a risk and go through some growing pains and it paid off.

That same young upstart than turned around and passed over someone with a very similar description. He went the “safe” route and it blew up in his face
Probably because the upstart still isn't comfortable and needs experience more than anything.

With that said, it's time. Freeman has been doing it long enough. Time to take some chances on some young coaches with imagination.

I know people have mixed feelings on him, but Goolsby had an interesting perspective on this. Ash can put guys in a position to succeed, but ultimately he doesn't have BYU's playsheet.

At some point, it's incumbent upon players to play smart and make plays/cause havoc. Greathouse did it despite Denbrock's playcalling. Talich did the same despite Ash. If you're a dawg like all these dudes claim to be, you sometimes got to just ball in big games.
The players absolutely share in the blame. There were a lot of missed tackles, especially in the first half.

Yeah I think ND went into this game thinking they could do enough to just run it and take a shot here and there and that would work. They were banking on the defense holding BYU under 21. Problem is teams who have shown a high safety we have struggled on offense against.
Yeah except they didn't freaking run it. And when they did it was with their 2nd and 3rd best backs. Except for the one time they used their RB1 and he ran it down BYU's throat on consecutive plays for a TD, never to be seen or heard from again.

I don't think Leonard Moore is healthy. Losing Traore after the third play of the game certainly didn't help matters either.

ND has lost three games with Ash as DC. All of them big games against quality opponents. This is worth noting because if Miami is also a debacle, a lot of equity that has been built among the fan base is going to flush fast.
I told my wife the same thing after the hit on the TE where he stumbled back 3 or 4 steps. Im honestly surprised coming off a concussion that he was not reevaluated. Dude straight looked like he got his bell rung

He has no experience at DC. ND DC is not a learn on the job football school. Look at A&M at OC

If ND can be a learn on the job school for the HC, it certainly can be the same thing at DC. Especially when Freeman has known Mickens for a long time and is a defensive minded HC.

The alignment here hurts my brain. Obviously Bowen is upset with it too. Gray needs to be on the strong side or the LBs need to widen out. This is going to lose 100/100 times pre snap. Doesn’t matter who’s got what zone wise.

You know what an easy adjustment if you are gonna play it this way would be? Whoever DE that is hands up right away to stop short passes. BYU did that all night on Carr. They constantly harp on marrying front to coverage, the DE basically makes this throw as easy as possible going for a speed rush outside.

ISD is definitely hammering the Blame Ash approach. Flammang's Morning After show was a total crashout. He basically just says the same thing two or three times in a row for effect.

I am starting to think that Ash is a problem against the big teams bc the scheme stinks. Denbrock needs to be more aggressive offensively but the scheme is less of an issue

yeah leonard moore is good and all but putting a single corner on a trips bunch is a tough assignment.

During the game I thought that ND was playing man under and getting caught with their backs to the play on all the horizontal stuff. But I guess they were actually just playing "wait who do i have?" zone coverage the whole time.

If you listen to the Always Irish postgame show, the caller "West Palm Pat" just absolutely lit into him (and Denbrock and Freeman, too). It was so perfect that I'm going to make it my signature. I can't stand him (ash).

OMG i didn't see that even on the re watch with the tv angle. I thought it was 100% bowen being late, he still probably was late but Gray needed to be where KVA was playing whoever goes inside, and kva on the field side blitzing unless RB goes out for pass. We had sanders, talich, gray covering 1 WR and possibly the RB if he leaks out, unreal.

I'm very confident that was an missed assignment pre snap alignment issue, it has to be, on third and 5 they have one player covering 3 wide to the boundary. No way that was the scheme. Purdue went 3 wide a ton vs us and we always had 3 people over there.

I’m not a fan of what either coordinator does scheme wise. The difference is that while I’m not a big fan of what Denbrock does schematically he at least gets the offense to do it well. Under Ash the scheme is bad and the players don’t do it well.

Our skill and talent the first few games got us through. The fact is in many times we were lucky that their was not catch or big play because the team we played sucked. This masked our warts and gave us false security

Agree. I also feel like Denbrock can manage the game better. But man we should dominate and try to impose our will offensively. Sometimes it is vanilla

Good luck. I wouldn’t count on the spring chicken coordinator hiring philosophy for the program, especially when the HC took time to learn and get us to a good/decent spot. We hit on the HC I believe but I wouldn’t make a habit of hiring people with no experience that you think “may” be good at the coordinator job.

Except for the War Daddy hire, it seems MF understands this.

Ash is the Brian Kelly of DCs.
Wins those he should, sniffs his own farts when against peer/near-peer offense.
Coach Free should have taken over at halftime like he did at Purdue last year.

Rees was also a learn on the job hire. My opinion of Rees isn’t high, but I can’t deny his coaching success.

What I don’t want to happen is for us to beat Miami in a sort of one off or flukey fashion, have us win our and beat some G6 team at home in the playoffs and have that be enough for MF to justify running it back next year when the alarm bells are ringing and ref flags are waving that this guy is a poor coach propped up by superior talent.

He has a giant chance to redeem himself in three weeks. I really hope he does.
Same. Better this than sitting here with half the schedule left to be played and making short lists for his replacement.

The season isn't over yet. There is a ton left to play for.
