Football State Powerhouses

I didn't think it was gonna get that talked up but mods if you want to move those posts from Malik Zaires thread to here....


I always pegged Toledo area as the small school area powerhouse in the state. I was surprised to see Whitmer that highly ranked for D1.

Ever since Genoa got Vicars they have been a powerhouse for what...D3/D4. They had a great chance to beat Kettering that year in the semis. I think Kettering had 4 kids going D1 and they were all impressive.

Lakeside Blue Ridge here in Northeast AZ.

They are 3A. AZHS is 1A(smallest, 8-man football) to 5A (most Phoenix and Tucson schools).

If you're talkin' Ohio, Cleveland St. Ignatius has to be on top. 11 State Championships (all since 1988, so you do the math) and 3 National Championships. Playoff appearances in 22 out of the last 23 seasons. Several D1 and NFL players (including, recently, Dan Fox and Robby Parris).

No doubt that in Ohio it's gotta be Saint Ignatius. Moehler, St. X, and Canton McKinley would probably be in the second tier. I'll give a shout out to my alma mater Canton Central Catholic too although they are a small D3/4 school they have won a couple state titles in 1988 and 2000. Also the home of Alan Paige.

in indiana its Carmel/Warren Central in 5A (largest division) 4A has been owned by Cathedral for the past 5 years and before in the 90's (8 state championships since 1992) 3A is Bishop Chatard (10 state championships) not sure about 2A and 1A

Cincinnati and Cleveland are obviously the best areas in the state for football as its already been mentioned and its mostly the Catholic schools there. Columbus has improved and has had really good teams pop up every once in a while like Upper Arlington, Dublin Coffman etc. Toledo has also had its fair share of great teams with Central Catholic, Southview, and now recently Whitmer. Steubenville and Cardinal Mooney are DIII/IV programs that can compete very well against any size program in the state.

I didn't go to the game but I heard it was a tough game but Genoa had it in the bag then Eastwood pulled a Michigan and scored two touchdowns in less than a minute the story goes...

Sorry to burst your bubble. There are no powers in Ohio anymore. Power is spread Through out the state. That is what maks Ohio so tough compared to most states.

There is nothing that makes Toledo a powerhouse. Worst football out of the four cities is played there.

D5 - Youngstown Ursuline 3 of the last 4 years state champs

D3/D4 - Cardinal Youngstown Mooney - 4 state titles since 2004

D2 - Hit or miss every year

D1 - Cleveland St. Ignatius - 11 titles since 1988 - If it's not CSI is Elder-Colerain-Edward-Davidson that win

Small schools like the ones mentioned are hard to judge because they play crappy competition. They do beat up on schools their size but not sure how they would do against big schools.

Example: Kenton wins tons of games with big scores. When they do their scrimmages against big schools they get destroyed. Cannot compete.

As mentioned in my previous post small schools are very hard to judge. Mooney is tough. Those large schools you mentioned Ignatius may be but there are no schools that destroy everyone. Most games are competitive against top teams. Therefore it is hard to call these schools powerhouses. If anyone is it is Iggy but alot of schools have closed the gap.
My whole point is if these schools were in most states they would win alot of titles. But so who alot of teams in Ohio. Maybe we are saying the samething but defining it differently.

While Indiana (where I'm from) isn't known for it's powerhouse football programs, I've been very pleased with the recruits they've been putting out as of late.

Yes they have been. Just overall not a good team. Easy win for good D1/D2 schools. We scrimmaged them every year the last five years and once we adjusted to the gimmick offense we just pounded them. And we were not that good compared to teams in our area. Just average.

at least in cincinnati, moeller, st x, elder and colerain are always the top team in the city. it seems like they take turns being the top team. i am only 29 yrs old but i know moeller dominated the 60s and 70s along with roger bacon. since then i would say all those schools mentioned above have all had great programs and have multiple state championships.

So, I think that state football talent goes in this order:

Florida
Texas
Cali
Ohio

With Pennsylvania and New Jersey around the fringe

I think, like you mentioned, we are on different wave lengths. It looks like you are putting the emphasis on straight killing teams while I am emphasizing wins. The teams I mentioned win state titles on a consistent basis in recent years which is why I am calling them powerhouses.

--sidenote because I am a Comet. I think the year Genoa went to the state semis against Kettering I think they had the largest point differential in the entire country. Weak competition or not it's a pretty impressive record.

Like I'm sure everyone else thinks, Toledo is extremely weak in D1 and D2 but their smaller division teams have been more consistent. Not necessarily winning state titles but always in playoffs and going far into them.
