Standout safety Eamon McOsker of Los Angeles Loyola had committed to Pennsylvania several weeks ago, but now he has decided to play for Notre Dame as a preferred walk-on.

"I thought it was too good to pass up," he said. "It's been my dream to play for them."

McOsker has been to Notre Dame at least 10 times. His older brother, Garrity, attends the South Bend, Ind., campus, and his father has worked for the school in development.

McOsker was the defensive player of the year in the Serra League.

When a player is referred to as a preferred walk on does that mean they make the team automatically, and they just have to pay their own way? Or do they still have to prove themselves to the coaching staff like other walk ons do, to make the team?

In some instances, a college coach/recruiter may designate an athlete as a "preferred walk-on" during the scouting process. In this situation, the athlete is assured a spot on the team, however the coach is unable or unwilling to offer a scholarship.

Makes sense, thank you.

Kid could be our next special teams love affair.. Good for him.. He can only help the program with that kind of desire.

So if this pickup a defensive player or offensive player?

Judging by his DPOY and our shortage of DBs I would assume defense.

^this and he seems fast, don't know the type of competition he plays against but he pulled away from guys in some of those clips.

plays in the best league in the toughest division in California and arguably the country. Not totally sure about the other teams Loyola played out of league though.

Wow, in that case, judging by the film, this is an exciting pickup. Salvi/Anello type special teams contributions might be the floor for him; I could envision him contributing in other ways.

Like I have stated, give me a 3* with heart, desire, the will to get better and to fight hard on every play then a 5* who wants it handed to him on a silver platter. Welcome aboard McOsker.

So im driving home from work now listening to 97.5 the Fanatic in Philly and first words i hear are "Penn".... "I cant believe no other Ivy League schools wanted him". ... " he wasnt even on their radar" ..."his dream"..." chance of lifetime". I immediately thought that they were referring to Eamon.

Me and my narrow mind. They were referring to Jeremy Lin

This kid may be our secret weapon next year. His desire to play for ND is obvious and he appears to have the speed and pysical ability to play either wide receiver or safety. I'm hoping he proves me right.
