Nine Spots on the Board

So, someone help me here. Coach Kelly left nine scholarships on the board this recruiting cycle...is that correct?

How does this impact depth, and how do we fill those spots? I am not going to lie, I have to be very critical of Kelly in this instance. How do you allow yourself to sign a class of 16? How does this impact us moving forward (serious question about depth and quality at positions...not looking for anti/homer views).

It's like we sanctioned ourselves for no reason haha.. No but seriously, I think the extra spots are for reasons like waiting for Neal, Deontay flipping, maybe a Darby return and saving for next years class.

This does set us up well for next years class which in my opinon is much more talented

The thing is, next year's graduating class is really small, and a number of guys have fifth years, so in that sense it's good that Kelly is leaving a few more scholarships to work with next year. If we take a bunch of 5th-years this year, and reel in a big class next year, we should be fine in terms of overall depth. But the pressure is really on for next year's class.

Yes, the pressure is on for next year. And after this year's gut punch I find it hard to believe that they are going to pull out the class we need next year.

That may be true, but it can also be a spin job in trying to put a smilie face on a pretty crappy day. I am very disappointed in the results the coaching staff came up with here. And if they were honest with themselves, they would know this is a rather poor outcome for their efforts.

roughly 2 million spent on recruiting, 16 commitments, $125,000 per commitment.

So last year's class was just luck and this year's is just what he really only capable of?

I feel bad for anyone that has not watched ND recruiting for the last 7-8 years. It is the same thing every year (minus Teo)! We always lose 2-3 big name recruits and rarely make a splash on signing day! We are ND!

Thats funny because ND is 11th in national standings in recruiting over the last 5 years...not really backing your argument.

Have you been here the last 5 years? Trust me it happens every year! just expect it next year. We are always top 15 yes but we are also 2 flips and/or a few NSD steals away from being top 2-3. i really wish I had time to go back and list names but those names trigger a lot of bad memories for people who have been on this site for years!

Top 15 with 16 commits, that is a good return on your investment, IMO anyways.

Quality over quantity.

EDIT: Yes, I'm in a bit of denial. To be fair, DGB wasn't going to make or break this year for us. I still think Darby is bigger loss.

Do you honestly think that this is how they hoped the day and/or this recruiting season would go?

Do you think they did cartwheels when Darby and Dever walked away...much less Greenberry? You think they didn't try to get them back?

You think they all just sat at home in the quiet cold dark of a Michiana winter and didn't try to talk to the Armsteads, Neal, Rios, Algholar, Wright, etc?

My best guess is that they are extremely ticked (BK not allowed to be angry in public anymore though right? Has to play the consumate politician...). All of our info (such as it is and subject to the whims of 17-18 year olds) pointed to the fact that we weren't sure we would be able to fit all the elites we were after into the tent this year just a couple/few weeks ago. The fact that a lot of these guys stayed on the fence is probably why we have heard so much about the offers going out to the potential 2013 guys so much lately.

Am I happy...no! I like the guys that ARE in our class a lot, but I too thought we were in line for bigger and better, so this is not a blowing rainbows up anyone's butt post at all

What it is is my own 2 cents on the situation...and, i will leave you with one fact...when Babe Ruth led the majors in home runs, he also led in strikeouts.

Of he filled his needs, got screwed with two flips, and is going guns blazing next year...see, its a matter of perspective.

Actually CV...I am on your side...I was being facetious...see my more recent post just above

What is everyone so down about? I mean, if ND don't start off 0-2 this year, who knows what the recruiting class looks like. I always say to myself this isn't a race, its more of a marathon with BK getting ND to where we want it. Yeah sure, he wants to be top 10 playing in BCS games the past 2 years but that just didn't happen. It could be worse, look at Penn State. I think the WR class from last year and this year will be really solid. Plus, we have TJ and Theo back. Give it time, don't be bashing BK right out of the gates with this recruiting class.

Yea kinda like how we lost Lynch, Tuitt and Shaq at the 11th hour last year...oh wait, what did you say? We have a new coach? Oh yea thats right, the same coach who pulled in a monster hall last year, came in late the year before and did a decent job adding depth and pulling in some guys who are turning out to be hidden gems, and then this year brought in a very talented 16 kid class but lost a few of the big fish late.

With 24 schollies for next year now, we could end up with a monster class. We have a 5* lineman already committed who isnt going anywhere, we are sitting VERY good with 3-4 other elite OL for next year, and there is tons of talent and depth in the '13 class.

Our BIGGEST need this year in recruiting, even more than CB or WR was getting a Q We did that and now between Gunner, Golson asnd Hendrix are bound to have a good one behind center for the next few years.

ND football is in very capable hands. 3 years ago ND fans would have been THRILLED to land a Jarron Jones..this year we see him as another talented DL to add depth to an already stacked front 7 on D....think about that.

The recruiting classes are directly affected by the previous years performance. We don't get Lynch, Tuitt or Ishaq without the late run and bowl win last year. And if ND beats SC or Stanford ( or even just wins the bowl) I think today is totally different.

Next years class will be all about how ND does next season and what kind of buzz is surrounding the program going into 2013.

I'm going to reserve judgement on Kelly's recruiting by what I see on the field, not what some rating agency tells me. I liked what I saw with last year's guys. We'll see how this year's crop plays next fall.
