I had a friend text me tonight because she thought of me when she heard this news because she knows how big a fan of the game I am. That was the first I heard.

Paterno has had a huge impact on the game. I'm sorry to hear of his loss and my prayers go out to his friends and family.

Amazing that his health was proportional to his football career...once his career was over- IT was over.

That may be true, but neither Knute, Frank, Ara nor Lou allowed for little boys to be throttled by an assistant coach under their watch. I guess I don't understand where you're coming from here.

Agreed, and with that comment you see the STARK difference between Penn State and Notre Dame. Paterno became bigger than the program. To the point where the kids were DEMONSTRATING AGAINST his dismissal when things started going down. That was very sad, but shows what can happen when one person is allowed to become greater than the program. That issue is what allowed the whole sickening episode to occur. :(

For all of our history and wonderful leadership and coaching in the past, no one person ever became greater than Notre Dame football (Knute was close, I suppose). And for that, I am thankful.

apparently he has not passed?

A letter from the Managing Editor of Onward State:

Earlier this evening, Onward State reported that Joe Paterno had passed away. However, the mountain of evidence stacked opposite that report is too much to ignore. At this time, I would like to issue a retraction of our earlier tweets.

I never, in a million years, would have thought that Onward State would be cited by the national media, and today, I sincerely wish it never had been. To all those who read and passed along our reports, I sincerely apologize for misleading you. To the Penn State community and to the Paterno family most of all, I could not be more sorry for the emotional anguish I am sure we caused. There are no excuses for what we did. We all make mistakes, but it’s impossible to brush off one of this magnitude. Right now, we deserve all of the criticism headed our way.

In this day and age, getting it first often conflicts with getting it right, but our intention was never to fall into that chasm. All I can do now is promise that in the future, we will exercise caution, restraint, and humility.

I can only hope and pray that the outstanding work our writers and photographers do on a day-to-day basis is not overshadowed by the events of tonight. I understand that our reputation is in serious question, but I hope you will continue to stand by us as we do everything in our power to make amends.

To begin that process, I will be stepping down from my post as Managing Editor, effective immediately. I take full responsibility for the events that transpired tonight, and for the black mark upon the organization that I have caused.

I ask not for your forgiveness, but for your understanding. I am so very, very, sorry, and we at Onward State continue to pray for Coach Paterno.

Sincerely,

Devon Edwards

What other thread? Do we have a child molestation thread and those which hide it?

I was chastised by....awww hell, some tom, **** or harry, have no idea. Saying this was meant to be a Celebration of Joe Poo. I don't see it that way. He's as dirty as Sandusky and I ain't talkin' about the city in Ohio.

There's a thread for that and you're well aware it, you've got 11 posts in it.

Thanks for changing the title for whomever did it. Things are far clearer now re: expectations of this thread.

It's sad and ironic how a man who did so much, will be remembered most for not doing enough.

Very true. All the great things he did, and the great coach that he was, will be mentioned hand in hand with the sad matter which brought him down. It will always be remembered together.

Official...

RIP Joe Pa.

Whether you agree with how he handled this situation, I am sure he is chilling out right now discussing his career with Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy, Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, and all the other coaching greats.

I remember how I felt on the day that Bo passed away. Felt like a demolition crew took a wrecking ball to my heart.

RIP Joe. I hope you and Bo have some discussions in heaven, on what it would've been like if you two coached against one another.

They're probably already in one of Leahy and Knutes coaching seminars.

I can safely say that in this college football climate we will never see the likes of JoePa. 62 years at one university, incredible. Clearly when he lost football, he lost his life. I guess he was right about Bryant all these years.

Probably not. As I watch ESPN and hear people paying tribute (some of it platitudinous), I remember that he was no fan of ND, for God knows what reason, and made it clear through his comments. Some of you may not recall ND's bygone rivalry with PSU but Paterno was never a gentlemen when it came to ND.
So I'm sorry for his family's troubles but I won't be shedding any tears or heaping on any empty compliments.
