SMH. Can we wait until we at least get a couple 10 win seasons first?

Brian Kelly Receives Two-Year Contract Extension - UND.COM - University of Notre Dame Official Athletic Site

Jan. 10, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame announced today that it has exercised an option included in head football coach Brian Kelly's contract to extend the contract for an additional two years. The action extends Kelly's contract through the 2016 campaign.

"While Coach Kelly and I are focused on the additional work that must be done to reach our goals, I am very pleased with the progress we have made during the past two years." University of Notre Dame vice president and director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said. "Our football team's performance on the field, in the classroom, and in the community reflect Coach Kelly's commitment to building a program that will be able to sustain success in the long run, and to doing so in a manner consistent with Notre Dame's values and tradition."

"I want to thank Father Jenkins and Jack Swarbrick for their unwavering support of me the last two years," Kelly said. "My family and I are truly blessed to be at Notre Dame and we are excited about what the future holds for the Fighting Irish football team. I also want to thank Father John and Jack for the commitment they made to the football program last week by renewing the contracts of our assistant coaches. I think we have one of the finest coaching staffs in the country at Notre Dame, and the confidence our administration has shown in us is truly appreciated."

On Jan. 2, 2012, it was announced the six returning Notre Dame assistant football coaches all received contract renewals.

"The quality of the assistant coaches that Coach Kelly has brought to Notre Dame is evident both in their performance and the interest that other schools have shown in them since the end of the regular season" Swarbrick said. "Building on the foundation we have now created and maintaining continuity is critical to the future success of our football program, and that is why we have secured the continued service of our football staff."

Its almost SOP these days for coaches to need 5 years in the bank, contract wise. They need to be able to sell to recruits that they KNOW they are going to be there. Hell, IU gave their new coach a 7 year deal, think there's any REAL chance he'll last 7 years? Me neither.

This is fantastic news. If Brian Kelly can't bring us back to the BCS, it's unlikely that anyone else can. He was easily the best new coaching hire 2 years ago, and that hasn't changed.

Notre Dame made as close to a slam dunk hire as you can make, bringing in a successful BCS-level coach at a time when their program is likely to bounce back a bit.

We need to keep a staff together and see what it can do... haven't done that over a long period since Daive was coach... so i'm cool with it...

but please run the damn ball more often... I'm losing my hair with all these INT's in the red zone.

Lookin' good for running the ball ACamp, with Martin as OC. His best teams at GVS were twice as likely to run than they were to pass.

More running plays should benefit the two running QBs more. I think we will see the Oregon type Spread now. Golson can be our Darron Thomas but a better passer

Good news. We need to have stability at the top. And it reasures possible recruits that he is sticking around.

I am a Kelly backer, but 16-10 won't even get you an extension in the NFL.

The interesting thing, and this applies to college football in general, is that Kelly is 19 points away from being 22-4. In 2010, we lost three games by a combined 8 points. In 2011, we lost another three by a combined 11 points.

Not saying it makes 16-10 acceptable, but it is interesting.

Yes, yes, yes. I think everyone wants to see this happen.

Great news!

We need the stability. Firing a coach after 2 or 3 years is despicable. We were at the abyss, but Kelly's bringing us back. It may take some time, but he has to have his players in to achieve his goals.

Very happy to hear this news. He is clearly building a team through recruiting that can succeed in all 3 phases of the game. This announcement will only help that much more.
