You could say this about any player in the country. We would have taken player X if we hadn't gotten player Y. If we didn't get player X or Y, we would have taken Z. And so on. If we didn't get Lynch and Tuitt we probably would have taken a couple of other D-linemen that aren't as good. I don't know how the fact that would have taken him if we hadn't got the player we actually wanted changes anything.
The point of the argument is that Schutt and Reeves aren't "unwanted scraps" by ND. They are both great players in which case Schutt got the short end of the stick. He is a great, quality lineman that ND had high on their list but had Day higher and only had so many slots so when Day commited they had to turn Schutt away.
