I thought BGIF reported that it wouldn't count till 13?

He won't count if ND doesn't pay his way. The new school CAN put a transferree in good academic standing at the former school (NCAA Bylaws defines those conditions) on scholarship while the athlete sits out the required period. If the athlete is on scholarship he is a "counter", in NCAA terms, against the 85 athlete roster limit.

When Bememderfer, Burger, and others transferred into ND it was my understanding that they paid their own way during the sit out period. So in essence they were walk-ons and were not counters until being granted a scholarship. The high cost of a year of tuition, room and board at ND has been one of the reasons cited for the scarcity of transfers into ND. It's expensive to pay your own way for a year.

I've seen posts here that Carlisle will count against the 85 man roster but I've seen no published reports confirming that he will be on an athletic scholarship during the 365 day non-playing period. IF he's not on athletic scholarship, he is not a counter.

I don't know if the poster or his source have read the pertinent section of the NCAA Bylaws, I did. ND can't comment until the transferee is enrolled. Until then the only knowledgeable sources would be the athlete and family.

Thanks for explaining that. I wasn't trying to put you on the spot.

i don't ever see cierre being the thunder in a thunder/lightining combination.

i hope we get a chance to see if camro is the thunder one day though...knee injury was nasty.

Suck it, Reindeer Games!!!! Only thing that sucks is that his scholarship counts against this year's numbers...

This is great news! It will definitely add some much needed depth in the RB position assuming he is not going to play a slot receiver..There will always be a place for a smart kid with a 4.43 40. However, my concern now is we have one less scholarship to offer this year despite him not being eligible until 2013.

I hear what you guys are saying, but think about it this way- has ND landed another RB this cycle, say Byron Marshall, likelihood is that either he or Russell or Mahone would have redshirted. In that scenario, their scholarship would still have counted against us for 2012. consider Amir's spot as that. However, in this case, when he comes off his redshirt he will be 3 years into a training program and one year "better" than whoever would have redshirted as a true frosh, PLUS three years eligibility.

Dare I say this is an even better situation?

I hope so, too. However, landing Mahone takes some of the pressure off Cam coming back and having to be the one to play that role right away.

Unfortunately I agree, but I think Cierre would be successful at it if he did... he could easily add 10 lbs of muscle to his frame (though I know he doesn't want to)
In runs this year he seemed to possess quickness (i.e. the u of m game), but lacked the 5th gear to get him to the end zone, which I think Riddick has. So, imo, until a Roberson or Mahone steps into the thunder roll, lightning strikes twice at Notre Dame.

Report: Carlisle To ND

And is that their interpetation of the NCAA Bylaws or based on confirmation for an ND rep, Carlisle, or his family?

Thanks for explaining that. I wasn't trying to put you on the spot.

I didn't think you did. There's conflicting viewpoints and the NCAA Bylaws indicate it can be handled in more than one way. I based mine on my own reading of those Bylaws and ND precedents on transfers I'm familiar with.

Prestwood counts too, doesn't he?

Good point. In my responses I specifically commented on Bememderfer and Burger as they were reported by ND as walk-on transfers who later (a year or so) were award athletic scholarships.

I don't recall reading where Prestwood was on athletic scholarship in '11 and thus a "counter". The '11 ND Football Media Guide Roster doesn't list Prestwood as a member of the team. That could be because he's not on scholarship BUT it could also be simply that the Guide went to print before he was actually enrolled at ND so it's not valid indicator.

The ND Media Guide for the Champs Sports Bowl DOES list Prestwood on the ND team roster with no symbol designating him as a walk-on. In the absence of a typo (left out the symbol) that would indicate he is on scholarship.

The Carlisle and Prestwood transfers have different elements from the Bememderfer and Burger transfers. Burger had deficient academics to gain entry into ND. He was quoted about that in an Observer article. He went to Dayton to get his academics in order then transferred to ND academically AND walked on in football. I believe he was one of the founder's of the Walk-on Player's Union, WOPU (It's like the Red Army). Neither Burger nor Bememderfer were highly recruited prospects. I don't recall ND recruiting either. Bememderfer went to Northwestern and then transferred academically into ND and walked on later earning a scholarship.

Carlisle and Prestwood were both highly recruited by ND. The fact that they were recruited and transferred within a semester may have bearing on their status. I don't know if the short timing (less than a semester) has any bearing NCAAwise. It be simply that they are much greater talent and would have gone elsewhere had ND not offered scholarships (which ND is allowed to do but does not have to do under the NCAA Bylaws when a student is in good academic standing at the time of transfer). And therein lies another variable - was Prestwood in good academic standing at the time of his transfer? It was reported that he had to take a language course over the summer to gain admission to ND (in retrospect that may have been the reason it opted for FSU in the first place, he may have had a conditional offer to ND last year) and he was taking some courses over to get up to par with the rest of ND's freshman class. Some fans may not realize that ND freshman take a block of similar courses, Freshman Studies. It's possible Prestwood had to academically work his way into an athletic scholarship. Wouldn't happen in the SEC but this is ND.

It was all crystallize in less than a month on Signing Day. Kelly can comment on EE's and transfers AFTER they enroll so he could reveal the numbers sooner.

Did not take long for the SC fans to start bashing Amir. They are saying he was overrated and injury prone. Too bad they are taking to the dirty road.

The thing I like the most about him is that he is a great kid who will represent ND in the best way possible. He is a class act.

I can see him being used as a "Percy Harvin" type player. Move him all over the field and has great speed.

DO WORK!

I could be wrong, but I don't thnk he has Percy Harvin-type speed. Not at all. Percy Harvin is a special player.

According to their HS senior profile on rivals, Harvin ran a 4.4 40 and Carlisle a 4.43.

Sooooooo, Pretty Close!

Funny thing about that Marc Tyler tweet is that I saw him over Christmas break about two years ago and he said to me that if he could've gone back and done the whole recruiting process over again, that he probably would've strongly considered ND more, and probably would've committed along with Clausen...I swear Marc makes me laugh at times...but anyways, I don't want him to be Percy Harvin...I just want him to be Amir Carlisle
