Obviously things can change, but if you watch the ESPN interview from 12/31, Michigan does lead because he admits that they are in front. Listen to the way he talks about Michigan and repeated references to his friends, it would seem Michigan is definitely the team to beat. He did show up with Michigan and Stanford gear, but no ND gear.

Here is the link. The part talking about ND, MI, and Stanford is at the 4:20 mark.
2012 OT Joshua Garnett Interview - ESPN Video - ESPN

Quote from the interview:

"It definitely wouldn't be a misconception [to say they lead]. To be at a big time school like that, especially when you have guys like Eric Magnuson, [five-star tackle] Kyle Kalis ... when you have three big time linemen that could come in and compete with each other, build those friendships. They have some defensive linemen coming in, and Ohio State is bringing in some guys, so you can definitely have a good match-up in three or four years.

"All the linemen that have come out of Michigan and the legacy and going to the Big House with 115,000 people waving pom pons, saying 'Go Blue' ... it's definitely hard to turn that down."

IMO, he said that he has been wearing different gear to keep the fans guessing could be a good thing. He was spotted in Michigan and Stanford gear. The lack of Notre Dame gear could be to ND's advantage. What better way to keep people guessing by not wearing the gear of the team you are going to verbal too?

Welcome.

That reminds me of last year with Ishaq. At first I was excited his Dad was wearing ND gear. But once he put on the other stuff, I thought there was no way you would wear ND stuff first if he was leaning ND. Turns out, he was headed to PSU at the time.

It looks like Garnett is headed to Michigan, but things could change. I actually kind of think he is headed to Stanford, since he is so big on his future in medicine.

I don't see us landing him because I think we're about to really fill up tight on schollies (with rumored impending transfers) AND the fact that we don't have an OL coach right now.

I'm not even sure whether I care if it's Stanford or Michigan that wins out for his services.

With the group we already have, the group we are bringing in, and with Elmer committed for next season, I'm okay with not getting Garnett. As much as I would love to have a kid like him on the team and glad he is pursuing to become a doctor, football wise, not that great of a need.

I really am hoping for Armstead x2, Shumate, Wright, Westerkamp, Fuller, Neal.

I mentioned the ND gear just as a sidebar. The main reason I don't think he is ND is because of the way he talked about Michigan. His eyes just about lit up and a big smile talking about the big house, etc.

I'm thinking a likely end to the class (assuming Shumate commits tomorrow and Jordan Payton doesn't pull some crazy triple-cross surprise commit to ND) is:

Shumate
Armstead (The Younger)
Armstead (The Elder)
Westerkamp
Mystery Impending Transfer #2 and/or Neal, Ekanem, or Wright

This also all assumes no crazyness with decommits (looking at you Ronald Darby... stay strong).

foregone conclusion we lose out on Fuller then? I think your list is very accurate (with Wright), but I say we look to leave out a 5th year if we get Fuller

Please no more predictions. You are killing our class.

Any word on Josh's trip to Stanford this weekend? I know Kyle Murphy was there also. Any scoop?

Things have been awful hush hush with this kid. I know we're in his top-3. Anyone have any insight on which way he's leaning?

Stanford has been his alleged leader for quite some time.

According to Garnett's Interview from a couple of weeks ago with ESPN, Michigan leads.

Can you find a link? I remember thinking the same thing, but others here parsed his language and argued that UM isn't a likely leader at this point.

It's post #393. Here is the link to what I posted on Jan 6th.

Here is the quote from the interview. The way his face lit up when he was talking about Michigan was to me the dead give away. But that's just my opinion. Here's the link to the interview

Does anyone else recall Kiel and Garnett getting along well on their visit? I'm wondering if his commitment might help with Josh.

Either way, Garnett's tweets seem to be all about Michigan. I'm not optimistic.
