Maybe I'm a homer, but I can't believe anyone would rather play for Cal than ND, assuming ND wants you. Objectively, the likelihood of a Cal "dynasty" or a Cal run for the national title in the next five years must be considered nil. USC is ascending again, and Oregon is loaded.

And we'll be in the NC hunt in 5 years?

I anticipated your question -- no, I don't think it is out of the question.

Which do you think is less probable? Which do you think is a better program for the next five years, in terms of performance, quality of bowl games, likelihood of BCS appearances?

I'd say it definently sounds like ND is strongly in this, but Cal probably leads and will land him sadly. Would love to be wrong

The thing I took away from the chat was that it's a Notre Dame/Cal battle, with Cal leading.

I think the part that dooms us is when he said the city he goes will play a big part in his decision. Don't know anything about the city at Cal, but it has to be better than South Bend.

Depends what you want in a city. South Bend is an okay college town. Is it Berkley? Well...Arik has to decide that.

It's terrible.

Neither. We are both mediocre. Cal has better chances at decent bowls because ND has almost no official tie-ins. Likelihood of either in a BCS game? 0 percent. Well 1%, never say never.

Considering Cal has produced more NFL talent than us over the last decade or so, I wouldn't really be talking.

I guess my point is they have all these great recruiting classes, and pros like Best, Jackson and Rodgers, and never really do squat in the PAC 10. One first place in ten years.

True, but Tedford has had only one losing season at Cal and depending on why you choose a school (education, winning, getting to the NFL), Cal could be a better choice. What if AA just wants to get to the NFL and could care less about conference titles? I am not saying that he does, but some recruits don't care about it.

Even more reason to come to ND! lol

Guessing his motivation isn't going to be productive. We just can't know. Let's just hope he plays for our favorite team. If not, let's hope he is a wonderful and productive person at another university, but that ND beats his team.

Agree. My intent wasn't to say what AA was ultimately looking for in a school. Only he can know that. My point was that some kids have certain goals that differ from what we think they should be.

Cal is a great school and is in a great part of the country. Most importantly, it isn't USC.

Maybe so. But Tedford's last five years have been pretty mediocre and in conference they are under .500 over the last five. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I think ND has better prospects in the next two or three years than Cal does.

Between Mark Richt and Jeff Tedford, I still don't know how they are coaching with the way their seats remain hot year in and year out.

Tedford:

2002 California 7–5 4–4 T-4th
2003 California 8–6 5–3 T–3rd W Insight
2004 California 10–2 7–1 2nd L Holiday 9 9
2005 California 8–4 4–4 T-4th W Las Vegas 25 25
2006 California 10–3 7–2 T-1st W Holiday 14 14
2007 California 7–6 3–6 T-7th W Armed Forces
2008 California 9–4 6–3 4th W Emerald 25
2009 California 8–5 5–4 T-5th L Poinsettia
2010 California 5–7 3–6 8th
2011 California 7–6

I'm sometimes accused of being a bit bearish on the Irish, but I would bet Vegas would put the odds of ND making a BCS bowl once in the next five years at well north of 1%. They just need to rank 14th, right? That's not an overly homerish expectation for once in the next five years.

As it relates to Tedford, how many winning seasons in the last 25 years do you think Cal had prior to his arrival?

6. Six seasons with a record above .500 since 1976 prior to Teford and the last one was 1993.

Cal would be foolish to dismiss him.
