For those of you questioning whether Andrew Hendrix can't be a good starter for ND, could you please tell me what evidence that you have for that? Are you basing it on the one half he played against Stanford or the 12 plays he played last night? Frankly, Golson may be the starter next year, but it is WAY too early to say that Hendrix is not an upgrade over Rees.

Honestly, yes. I am basing my opinon of Hendrix off of his performance against Stanford and FSU. I expected more production. I thought he would be quicker and more mobile than he was.

I want an athletic, dynamic player running BK's offense. And Hendrix wasn't dynamic enough for A LOT of people...

It's time to give Golson the go.

I personally would have rather seen BK develop him this season and not worry about the red shirt. Red shirting a QB is a privelage. And quite frankly, we thought we had a qb and we were wrong. We didnt have the luxury of being able to red shirt a QB. But we did anyways. We need to red shirt QBs when we have a true #1 and #2 qb. Then you sit the freshman and red shirt him....

I would have been fine with developing Golson at some point this season.

Andrew Hendrix is plenty athletic enough. We dont need Michael Vick, we just need somebody who can tuck it and pick up 7 when there is nothing open, or somebody who is a threat to keep it on the read option and pick up 6 yards...or run a naked bootleg, or get outside the pocket and still have a chance to make a play downfield. Tebow wasnt any more athletic than Hendrix is, probably less so actually and he ran the spread just fine. Hendrix has a cannon, he just needs more reps and experience so the game slows down for him a little bit as it does once you have a better grasp of what is going on.

fact of the matter is that we need an athlete at the QB position. one that can make a play when there's nothing there. right now coach kelly is calling plays that aren't working and when that's the case with rees in the game it's a sack. with hendrix or golson in the game, it's a possible 10 yard scramble or broken play completion. get somebody in there that can bail the coach out, b/c right now that is needed. Coach needs to be 100% right with rees in the game and that's simply un-realistic.

Also Golson was redshirted as much because we wasnt ready physically as he was because he didnt have the experience. Kid was maybe 195 lbs soaking wet. He needed the red shirt year to put on muscle and be able to have any chance of withstanding a years worth of college football.

Besides that one terrible, terrible, terrible pass, Hendrix actually threw the ball very well, IMO. Him and Golson will have a good competition this spring.

I respect your ideas, but I think that you are asking a lot from Hendrix. Stanford was his first real game action in 2 years and if you assume that Crist was the "backup" during the season, I would question the number of practice reps AH was getting for the bulk of the season.
To use an analogy, if a golfer only goes to the range for two years then tries to play a tournament, he will hit some good shots, but will struggle with pressure of competition and make some costly mistakes. Hendrix made some plays in both games, but he did make some mistakes. I am not saying the Hendrix will be great, or even good. I just don't think the body of evidence is sufficient enough to write him off yet.

And Tommy is physically ready to excel in this offense??? C'mon bro! lol

Still would have rather seen BK start to develop Golson at the end of the season. So what if we loose his red shirt. **** happens. I dont think its the end of the world if we dont red shirt Golson. Again, I dont think we had the privelage or luxury to red shirt someone this year. But thats just my opinion.

This is true. And i am in a way writing him off. Just from what ive seen, and what i want to happen with this offense. My decision would be to develope Golson and let his God given talent drive our oppents defenses crazy!

Rees was recruited for Weis's offense. So, that's the first thing people should think about before they scapegoat him. Then, because Kelly decides he's the best QB on the team to run his offense in 2011, he gets crucified by a fanbase who seem to have an inability to place anything in context. If you're going to blame anybody, blame Weis and Kelly. Weis left us with one upper class QB, and Kelly made the decision to play Rees. He did his best. It wasn't good enough. But this mocking of Rees has become creepy. He is an ND kid who is doing his best. If there was Joe Montana sitting on the bench, we'd have seen him.

We are who we are, a team with two average sophomore QB's and one promising freshman who has no game experience. We also have average upper class receivers in Goodman, Toma and Walker. People better take a deep breath and put everything in context, because the likelihood of a massive jump in QB play and passing game productivity is unlikely, unless Golson is the second coming of Terry Hanratty and Daniels (or the incoming freshman receivers) are the second coming of Jim Seymour and Rocket.

We are a rebuilding program facing an incredibly difficult season in 2012. No amount of fanbase impatience, or mocking current players, is going to change the fact that that combination is going to be difficult, and that it's going to be awhile before we can hope to look like an elite team again. Is it too much to ask people to look at the facts, temper their short term expectation and go with the growing pains without mocking and scapegoating players? Kelly must recruit and develop us to elite status. Let's hope he can get it done.

I really do wonder what would have happened this year had Crist remained the starter.

I think ND would be playing in a few days and we'd have one less scholarship available this year. Crist was shaky in the first half of his first game, but in the very limited time he got to play after that, he was throwing darts out there. I think he was like 7/9 (4 perfect passes against USC) after the USF game. I would have liked to see how he progressed. I don't blame him for being bad in the first game of the year and his first game back from major knee surgery.

All of this "I think we should've stuck with Crist" talk is garbage. Everyone was calling for his head, myself included, at the beginning of the season. Do I think Tommy is the QBOTF? Hell no! But, he served us well this year. He's a good QB but he's already reached his potential. We need more. With Rees we're an 8-4 team, at best, every year. With Crist I don't know what we would've looked like but hindsight is 20/20 and it's always easier to say we made a mistake by giving up on Crist. Personally, I think that Crist would've been injured again had he remained the starter and Tommy would've taken over sooner or later anyways.

No. Against bad teams, maybe.

Which is why I said we'd be an 8-4 team, at best, every year with him at QB.

We had the talent to be 11-1 this year. Heck, even some of the non-Irish experts predicted 10-2/11-1. I've never dogged Kelly but this is the one mistake I think he's made. 8-5 is a bad year for how talented this team was.

I couldn't agree more. But, as we saw, it was relatively contingent on quality QB play.

Not trying to stir a Crist vs Rees debate again, good Lord no. Looking back though, 20/20 hindsight, just curious how it would have gone. Even on positive yardage plays, you can still see his limitations. For example, I believe the 3rd quarter he hit Eifert for a 20 something yard gain but it could have been a lot more had he led Eifert instead of under throwing him to the point were Eifert had to slow down and almost turn around to catch it. If he leads him and hits him in stride, we are talking a big gain. Saw that one too many times this season. I was able to live with Crist being inaccurate to start the year because of his rust but he has the arm strength and with two busted knees is still more mobile then Rees.

I reiterate, I am not trying to start a Rees vs Crist debate again.

I started this thread because A) I was intoxicated and at whits end B) Tommy has had every opportunity to prove himself C) What I think Tommy had over the other QBs was his confidence and cerebral ability, but has proven he folds under pressure like a cheap lawn chair D) What has always irritated me is that he is a winner, NO he isn't just lucked out, or saved by the defense E) Some feel we are being to hard on him because he plays his best he can, sorry but he isn't good enough in anyway being mentally, atheletically, fundamentally...... F) Alot of us aren't good enough to play for Notre Dame, and neither is Tommy. This is not intended to be mean, but it's the truth as I see it. It may not make it right in some peoples opinions, but this is America and while we still have the freedom of speech we are entitled to speak our minds.

Agreed. My biggest issue with Crist was his perceived lack of mental toughness. He looked scared out on the field. Now, that may have been BK's fault because he never seemed to show any faith in Crist. It always seemed like Kelly was waiting for him to **** up so he could throw Rees in. But, at the end of the day, Crist just never looked like he was tough enough for that situation. Tommy played like it was his job to lose. Crist played like he had already lost it.

...Nice job, agree.

would only add that Tommy didn't try to do poorly. We can evaluate his play with a failing grade, but lets move on.

As for Golson and Hendrix...EG will still be smallish. Hendrix is more stout. If you want someone to truly run the offense, I'm still worried EG takes some shots that put him on the sideline...and yes Tommy is smallish too, but he doesn't run the entire offense. A running Qb always runs the risk of getting tagged...look at some of the hits Hendrix took in his short time at the Helm. I think Hendrix will win the job.

As for his throw for int. He had a brain fart...so what? If you played the game and never had a moment like that as a puppy...well, good for you. Same as a reciever failing to recognize coverage and running the wrong route. His internal clock went off, and he either mishandled the ball, and it didn't go where he intended, or he simply missed the LB or some of both.

Great. Now bashing a 20 year old college football player is being advocated in the name of America and freedom of speech. Hell, even NDNation is seeing that its time for this to stop bashing Rees. Sorry if I'm trampling on your freedom of speech by asking you to show some decency. I was hoping that Notre Dame values might have some authority here.

Playing Tommy Rees this year was terrible coaching period, it is possible that Kelly should lose his job for it. It was that bad of a mistake.

Who cares it is what it is, you sat a five star recruit for over achiever. Kelly was wrong and we suffered. There is no person on earth that convince me that Crist would not have been better, nobody.

I've never been the biggest Rees fan, but I trust Kelly enough to trust his basic decision on who best can start in his system. I think certain in-game moves can be reasonably questioned -- ie, going to Rees last night after Hendrix drove them to the five yard line in the first quarter -- but I support the basic starting decision as defensible and I trust Kelly is in the best position to know.

Not making excuses, but Rees was shorthanded without Floyd at full strength, and that emphasizes Rees's lack of mobility, because he really doesn't move well enough to extend plays.

Having said this, and while I'd give Rees a fair shot next year, gotta believe Hendrix is the guy, with Golson to follow.

Yes, I have been very consistent, I have been flamed consistently too. Sucks to be right and have a team that you care about suffer as a result. Kelly really has disappointed me.
