I was on the fence about BK when we hired him, all of last year and most of this year. I am fully on his bandwagon now. We are getting better, and while it is tough to look at scUM and see them win 10 games and know that should have been us, I still like where we are going. A few things have to change, though, for him (or any future ND coach) to be successful:
1. Let the man focus on coaching and recruiting. The demands on his time are ridiculous and they need to be evaluated. Can you imagine Saban putting up with all the time constraints...doubtbful. Coach needs to be able to do what he was brought in to do.
2. Scheduling needs to be re-evaluated. The top heavy nature of the schedule needs to be spread out and non-BCS teams need to be considered to fill the gap. Stepping up the quality of competition is understandable, but you cannot do that on a weekly basis (see LSU: bye, 'Bama, WKU, Ole Miss, Arkansas). You know you are going to get your best shot from everyone on your schedule, so be smart about your approach.
3. Add the video board and field turf. The home atmosphere at ND Stadium is severely lacking. It does not compare to where it once was. Sure, winning will help that as well, but Michigan, and Wake, taught us a great lesson about how to incorporate a video board and still keep with tradition. As for the turf...anything to avoid the potential for a field like the one we played on last night. Steps have to be taken to regain the competetive advantage at home.
