I don't understand the people arguing that PSU won't be a premier job.
They are going to clean house and then entire school/fan base will rally behind the new coach. Also, if the new coach can come in and have success, they will become an instant legend. It's much like ND in that sense... where athletic program success is defined by football success.
I don't know about you guys, but the PSU job would be at the top of my list if I were Urban Meyer, Al Golden, or anyone else for that matter.
If I were Al Golden, I'd be interested in the job too. Knowing I'm at the helm of a sinking ship with an apathetic fan base and support system would help me feel that way. And more, if I'm Al Golden, I'd know nothing on my resume supports me being a premier coach of college football (yes, I've done a few good things at a couple places...but nothing more) and a school that has had some degree of success over the years could be a pretty good place to land. If I'm Urban Meyer, I'd know I have a proven track record of winning at multiple stops, winning in the SEC, and winning National Championships....so I'll wait for the Texas, USC, or whatever job I want in a couple years to open up. Or I'll just enjoy spending time with my family and keeping up with football on television. If I do return to coaching, then I'm going to pick a school that fits into whatever it is I'm looking for to go win again-- weather, ambiance, recruiting hotbed, facilities, exposure, competition, and a more than reasonable chance of not only competing for National Championships, but claiming them too.
Regardless of if it's Joe Paterno or somebody else, Penn State will not be competing for a National Championship in the next 5 years, let alone win one. Chances are they will find a coach who is able to compete in the Big 10 most years and be able to beat teams like Iowa, Michigan State, Illinois, Northwestern, and Wisconsin their fair share of years.
Paterno was God Penn State his church and Sandowsky a former Cardinal. That is as far as college football has got so out of hand. Paterno in a press release today stated he will always support Penn State. But support what a top former assistant coach roam prey on kids for years and stay silent. Talk about moral decay God Paterno and his Penn State Church Football Program more important then kids being perverted raped. Repeat college football is beyond out of control.
Sure Sandowsky wasn't a Priest?
Sure Sandowsky wasn't a Priest?
Disagree about Meyer. If he goes to USC or Texas and wins a NC, it doesn't really elevate his perception. Sure it entrenches him as an elite coach even more, but it wouldn't surprise anyone because those programs are always contending for NCs. It's what they do.
If he won a NC at PSU (which I think he could), then he is upgraded to a legend of the game. Period.
I also disagree with the PSU won't be competing for a NC anytime soon. They were one last second scUM td away from a NC a few years ago. As someone who grew up going to PSU games, the gameday atmosphere simply can't be matched. With the right coach, they will be competitive on a national scale both on the field and in recruiting.
2007? So...they lost to a team that lost to a team that got azzwhipped in the National Championship game by Florida?
As far as Meyer at USC or Texas-- I was just throwing those schools out there. My point being that if and/or when Meyer returns to coaching, he's basically going to have his pick of jobs. There was a reason(s) he chose Florida over Notre Dame several years ago. Likewise, there will be other reasons for him to not coach at Penn St. As I've said before, because of various factors, I'll never say never when it comes to coaches. But I'll pretty much let you name the odds if you want to bet that Urban Meyer or any genuinely elite (meaning they've got the goods to back it up) coach takes that job.
I'm sure going to Penn St. games is quite the experience. I'd love to go to a game there. But that gameday atmosphere you speak of is mainly for the fans, not the players. The literal brain-rattling, roaring, hateful, powerful intensity and noise of the stadiums in Gainesville, Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, and Knoxville are d@mn intimidating places to frequent as a fan. As a player, well, that's even a different, more difficult story.
I don't think Penn St. is some sh!t job akin to coaching at UNLV or Toledo. But over the last 5-10 years, PSU is what-- at best, the 2nd best team in the Big 10, and at worst, the 6th best team in the Big 10? So let's be fair and call them the 3rd or 4th best team in the Big 10 from the last 5-10 years. They've been well behind OSU in that stretch. And in case nobody remembers, OSU in those years, in big games, has lost to Texas two of the 3 times they've played (with their one win coming in Colt McCoy's Freshman season), lost to USC both times they played, and got smacked around by LSU and Florida the only times they've played. But Penn State hasn't even been on par with OSU. There are essentially no discernible reasons right now to believe they will be competing for or winning a NC in the next 5 years. If they got a great coach to come there, then things may perhaps be different...but it's kind of a catch-22/vicious cycle they are in-- great coaches want to go somewhere they can win and win a lot, and Penn State right now isn't a place where Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, or Nick Saban probably feel they could go and win a NC. PSU is a good job, but it ain't Texas, OU, Florida, Alabama, USC, or even OSU.
It was 2005 and it was a fluke loss to Michigan.
In regards to the atmosphere...

That video pretty much sums why PSU is one of the top jobs in the country. As a player or coach, winning a NC for a school and fanbase that cares THIS much about football is the pinnacle in my opinion. I was at that game and as much as I love ND, the atmosphere simply cannot compare. I get chills just watching the video.
Sure, Florida and USC are better jobs when it comes to the talent available. But in terms of tradition, importance to the fanbase/region, and ability to really be remembered forever, PSU is one of the best. Only jobs that can compare are ND and 'Bama.
Bill Cowher? He's from PA.
We'll just have to agree to disagree then. I wouldn't put PSU on the Mt. Rushmore of college football...and neither would virtually everybody else I know who isn't from the region or has some ties to the school. Historically they believe ND, Alabama, OU, Texas, USC, Michigan, Nebraska, and OSU would go well ahead of Penn St. And more recently, would place Florida, Florida St., Miami, and LSU higher than PSU. And then throw Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, Texas A&M above or equal to PSU. Money, access, success, potential, or some combination of each would probably even now place teams like Oregon, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Oklahoma State on par with Penn State as coaching desirability.
To each his own though.
