The NBC ratings were not very good, so it will be interesting to see what NBC does. They are probably salivating at the Michigan game next year knowing how well that game did for ABC in prime time.

If I were making decisions, I would play USC and Michigan yearly at night on alternate years (since they are not both home games each year). Biggest rival...makes most sense.

Notre Dame football: Smooth ND night game may mean more - southbendtribune.com

The question I have, is what dark aftermath happened during/after that game in 1990? I was only 5,so I have zero recollection of anything.

I don't remember any speific incidents, but i do recall there being stories the next week about lots of public intox arrests in and around South Bend that weekend. But I wasn't legal drinking age yet, so I didn't really pay attention. Must have something to do with that.

OP - why don't you email the writer and ask him?

If we have a night game next year it will obviously be against Michigan. That game will obviously be our big recruiting day too

I'm a big fan of ND playing in primetime....I'm tired of all their primtime games being when they're away games, and the opposing team and their crowd is amp'd up for a primetime home game against ND....something just isn't right about that....I say the more primetime games, the better!

We owe Michigan an epic beating, too. I don't care if we play them at 9:00AM - I want to put them to bed.

Yes, more night games, please.

The atmosphere for that game was better than any I've been to so far here

I emailed Eric Hansen. He wrote back,

... there were all kinds of problems, including extensive property damage on campus and in the adjoining neighborhoods. Lots of arrests. Lots of problems with alcohol. Safety issues for people leaving the stadium and simply trying to get back to their cars.

ND was a lawsuit, Bearman v Notre Dame in '83 where a woman was knocked down got a broken leg when run into by a running fan after a night game. The runner had been drinking. It's an oft cited case in Crowd Control and Risk Management and lead to severe changes in '84 and after to ND's alcohol policy on campus.

Thanks for the info BGIF. I honestly had never heard of this incident.

I was at the USC game and it was an electric atmosphere. The whole day was great. But if ND has another home night game, I would not put that on top of my list of games to attend. I do think football at night is cool, especially on TV. But to be honest after the game it kinda sucked to sit in the car and not get back to the hotel until 1am. After a long day of tailgating and the game I didn't have much left. Losing the game probably didn't help.
I would much rather have the game end around 7-7:30 and that opens up so many more options for post game activities.

But this is just me. I understand the attraction of a home night game. I would just choose another game to attend.

Most parking lots did not close until 3 hours after the game. If the Irish had won the game, I would bet people who have gone back to the parking lot and started up their tailgates again...and by the time people left traffic would have diffused some. Then again.."Anybody driving half lit, is not too bright"..that was the highlight of the night after GAIIIs kickoff return. Anyhow yea after the loss I think everybody just wanted to get the f*ck out of dodge.
