I just got done rewatching yesterdays game and I'd like to hear some of your opinions on our QB situation. IMO I think we should either give Dayne another chance to start next week or start Tommy then mix it up a bit by rotating in Dayne and the two freshmen in for a few plays. What do you think?

If Irish build up a huge lead, then it makes sense to give some time to the others. But I like Rees as the starter.

In my humble opinion, leave Rees as the starter... He gets "it"

we want consistency, playing musical chairs with the QB's won't help that

Unless Tommy gets hurts Dayne will stay right on the sideline. But i do have to say that everytime Tommy comes off the field the first player is Dayne. Got to give him credit the way he is handling himself.

I think the Dayne argument is done. Kelly can't trust him to keep his cool under the pressure of a game and that's not going to fly. Rees is costing us 2+ turnovers a game. It's time for the sophomore Hendrix to get some time. He's much more athletic than Rees and could really help the offense on 3rd and short (1-4 yards) by adding the QB keeper option that Kelly's offenses thrive with. I mean I'd love to see Golson in there, but why burn an eligibility year with him if he is truly not ready.

Rees and Hendrix should start splitting some game reps. Unless Kelly has no faith in Hendrix.

I don't know who the QB should be. I just know that Rees has accounted for 7 turnovers in 2.5 games.

That's almost 3 TOs a game and it's not like this is his first time in the system or his first game action. He was in the same system last year and had 4 starts before this year.

When the QB is good for 3 TOs a game, the rest of the team has to play flawless just to have a chance to win against a decent team.

I'm OK with Rees, but I wouldn't have any problem with BK trying Hendrix or Crist again.

One of the turnovers didn't even have anything to do with him. Goodman fumbled the punt and He shouldn't be on the team. I said it last year and will keep on saying it he isn't a good player at all. The INT was all his fault. The fumble he got rocked and the o-line let the sack/fumble happen not so much Tommys fault.

I agree Dayne is done. But the Hendrix argument holds no water, theres a reason that he has not been in the discussion. Rees is still very young, and it shows, but he gives us the best chance to win. One thing that Rees does that is AMAZING, considering his age, he runs the offense, and calls plays from the line. That's incredible, he's audibles in and out of plays, that alone sets him apart from the rest. That is a HUGE advantage, and it makes up for his bonehead plays

I agree with you about consistency and not playing musical chairs, He's a great kid, but I have some doubts about Tommy being our answer at the QB position. He has a tendency to throw some ducks. I also see our offense being too predictable. I think mixing it up a little with the QB's would put the competition on their heels a bit and help us prepare for the future.

Reminder: I'm the first to admit I'm no expert and this is just my opinion.

Here's the question: what do you do when Hendrix throws a pick or fumbles? Go back to Rees? The team is putting up points with Rees under center. They just beat a good Mich. St. team by a good margin. Why would you mess with that at this point? Rees throws some picks but he's still getting used to the game to some degree. At this point, he's probably got the same experience as Crist. I don't see any benefit to keep rotating QBs right now. Rees threw 1 pick yesterday and fumbled after getting blindsided. He also ran the offense well and changed plays at the LOS when he saw an opening. I don't see any need for more change and upheaval.

I said 2+ turnovers a game, meaning game one (two INTs), game two (two INTs, one fumble), and game three (1 INT, one fumble). And your argument about it being the line's fault on the fumble holds no water. Tommy has to get that ball out of there before hand, even if it's throwing it away. Listen to Coach Kelly's post game presser he said that same thing I said at the time of the fumble in different words, "G*d dammit Tommy, get rid of the ball" - me. I was not counting the muffed punt by SureHands McGee.

I believe Kelly said something to this effect: He (meaning Rees) has to have a mental clock in his head and needs to get that ball out of there. Paraphrasing of course.

I say we wait to have this discussion after the next couple of games.
I think Rees might've been putting too much pressure on himself to get the 1st win, and that could've caused some extra to's.
Now that we have that win, he can somewhat relax and just play the game. They know how good this team can be,and it was shown yesterday.

No what I'm saying is give us some help and a change of pace. Mistakes will happen, especially with young QBs, no doubt. But Hendrix can help us in short yardage and has a cannon. I'm not saying start Hendrix at all, I'm saying lets use his strengths to our advantage and keep opposing coaches guessing. Up to ten (max 15) snaps a game will not change that this is Tommy's team. But it could add a dimension to this offense that other teams may not be able to stop or prepare for much.

My preference would be not to change, but after watching the game again I noticed Tommy had 3 or 4 good throws, credit for the rest of the completions goes to our receivers for making great catches. I don't think he hit Floyd in stride once and missed some obviously wide open chances.

^^^Truth that ball to Floyd near the boundary (where he had to come back to the ball, like he did numerous times in the game, P.S. God bless you Mikey) , if he throws it deeper it's a score easy. The corner was lunch meat on that play and the safety was playing footsie with the hash mark.

These are throws that must be made to drop the points Kelly's offense can. I really like Tommy but he has a long, long way to go.

Rees is THE man. No change needed unless there is an injury. I can see giving Golson or Hendrix some snaps if we build a good lead.

Spoken like a true Little Giant lmao. I am totally with you on this one. But do you think they plan on bringing back Hendrix for fifth year down the road? With recruiting I'd hope we wouldn't have to. Crist is not coming back, he won't get another year.

The idea of changing QB's right now is just crazy talk. CRAZY TALK. Does Rees need to cutdown on TO's, yes. Though you could make the arguement that our whole team needs to cutdown on TO's. We live and die with Rees this year because he is the best option we have. Period, end of story.

While I agree that he didn't hit Floyd in stride, there is no way that is a easy score, Floyd would have caught the ball at about the 20 and the safety had the angle to catch him around the 10. Yes it would have been a bigger play but by no means an easy TD. And for every throw you can point out where he was off target a little, I can point out a beautiful throw on his part, in this case the TD to TJ Jones, a perfect pass.

Most of us aren't saying that he didn't need to get the ball out faster, but if Martin had even touched the rusher at all then it doesn't happen. Martin and the guard double teamed one guy and left the guy coming around the edge untouched. Not a good play by Martin or by Rees.

Here's something else that I think is important. This team is trying to find its identity on offense, get into a groove, and just play good football. Throwing in different QBs is not going to make that any easier.

Hendrix already sat out last year, there is no redshirt (and well ND doesn't redshirt) to burn with him, only with Golson.

If we are thinking about the same play, Floyd was running down the sideline, and Tommy hit him in the window, but if he went over the top it would have been a TD because the safety broke to the ball alittle late.

8/10 times that throw is perfect because the safety gets to his position on time. If the safety did not break late, and Tommy led Floyd, it would have been a throw into double coverage, and we would have all been freaking out.

I don't think Tommy is reacting, and making his decisions while the play is unfolding, I think he reads the defense prior to the snap, and uses a method of probability to decide where the the soft spot in coverage is going to be, and puts the ball there. It's amazing that he can do that, but when he's wrong, he throws ugly INT's. He needs to beable to read the defense while the play is unfolding, but he is a true Sophomore. He's wayyyyy ahead of the curve. But, if teams start disguising coverages, ala alabama, then he's going to be in trouble.

Perfect on this pass, was over shoulder to the corner. Had the MSU DB not been imitating Gary Gray, he had a play on the ball. Good throw that worked, not perfect guys.

But we can agree to disagree guys. And I never said a word about switching QBs, never. I said some change of pace, short yardage help from Hendrix. That was all.

I'm curious about how long you have been watching football? The reason I ask is that Tommy Rees DOES NOT have a reputation for holding on to the ball too long. You could argue that he should have "felt" the pressure coming, and that would be a legitimate argument, if it weren't for Rees' relative inexperience. Tommy Rees started his 7th game, yesterday. That's just over half a season. People are asking him to look like a two year starter, with 20+ starts under his belt, out there. People are right about one thing, though: Tommy Rees is not "the answer" at QB. But they are dead wrong on why. Tommy's not the answer at QB because there is no question at QB. Tommy Rees is the starting QB of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and there's no competition. It's his team, hands down. You can cry and whine all you want, but no one who matters is listening. And, if they were, they would laugh you out of the room.

This exactly. The INT was Tommy being late on throwing the ball. The sack and fumble, was Tommy being late and not throwing the ball. Did no one watch Coach Kelly's presser, he said exactly these things. I like Tommy, think he'll do great. He just needs to keep learning. I have never, not one time on this thread roasted the kid.
