Gehrig Dieter: With the nation’s leading receiver, it’s not just beating a dead horse. The fact that the 6-3, 200-pound senior doesn’t hold a single BCS offer his seriously head scratching. It’s also played out to say that Dieter is putting up Playstation numbers. The kid has been in a league of his own this year in that regard.
If you hadn’t heard already, Dieter pulled in 12 receptions for a single-game national record 447 yards and three touchdowns in the easy victory over Elkhart Central. He broke the previous record of 421 yards on a 39-yard catch with four seconds left. He broke his state record of 373 yards he put up in the season opener two weeks ago.
Dieter did all of his damage against double and triple teams and borderline pass interference on most plays. Already with the build of a college receiver, Dieter literally pushed his way through the coverage, and has outstanding ball skills, normally finding the football at its highest point and out jumping the multiple defenders grabbing on to him.
The competition Dieter sees on a week-to-week basis obviously isn’t the strongest, but he’s absolutely dominating it on a level that you want to see from a future BCS receiver. To put it into perspective, Dieter now has 1,163 yards (to lead the country) threw three games. He needs less than 700 yards to break the state record for yards in a season. It wouldn't be surprising if he accomplished that in his next two games. A four-year starter, Dieter is also on track to graduate as the state’s all-time leading receiver.
Dieter has 4.6 electronic speed in the 40-yard dash. He’s a superb route runner. He also goes both ways, and he housed an interception from his cornerback position 47 yards for a score. Dieter’s touchdown receptions were 66, 70 and 90 yards.
Dieter currently has scholarship offers from Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, SMU, Toledo and Western Michigan. Many other schools including Auburn, Oregon, California, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana and Purdue are showing interest. Dieter is certainly good enough to play at all of those places.
