Spurrier tweaks Notre Dame's Kelly on QB shuffle - chicagotribune.com
Who the hell does Spurrier think he is? Yeah, maybe he is right about what he said, but to say this in such a demeaning manner. Why? Who asked you? What business is this of yours?
"I could be like those other coaches..." I mean, really?
This really pisses me off. As if the whole world was wondering what the great coach Steve had to say about the ND quarterback situation.
Explaining his own quarterback shuffle at South Carolina on Saturday, Spurrier tweaked Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly for announcing he planned on Dayne Crist being the starter for 13 games -- and then pulling the plug on Crist after one half.
Spurrier started sophomore Connor Shaw in a 56-37 win over East Carolina, brought senior Stephen Garcia in for the second quarter and previously had announced the better quarterback would start the second half. Garcia finished the game.
"I could be like those other coaches," Spurrier told reporters after the game. "The coach at Notre Dame said it was a very close competition and this guy is our quarterback for the year. I didn't say (Shaw) was our quarterback for the year, I just said he would start the first game.
"When you say you're going to do something, you're supposed to do it, aren't you?"
In fairness, Spurrier apparently missed Kelly's press conference leading into the season opener. The Irish coach did make it clear that while he planned for Crist to be the starter for all of 2011, the senior needed to perform to keep the gig.
"He's only gotten a chance to start against South Florida," Kelly said before Crist gave way to Tommy Rees in a 23-20 loss. "He's got to produce to be the starting quarterback each and every week."
Now that sounds like something he and Spurrier can agree upon.
