Day and Schutt's offer lists were pretty much the same except Schutt had a OSU offer. just watched both highlight tapes and Day seems to have a much quicker burst off the line than Schutt plus Day has already proven himself at the opening. I can see why they like Day better but you don't turn away 4:s: lineman.

PS when was the last time we had this problem?

So does this mean we're only taking TWO DL?? Day and Jones (presumably). Seriously, TWO defensive linemen?
No.

I'm surprised as hell that they told him there is no room at this time because getting Top DL is such a hard thing for everybody but even more so for ND the last 10 to 15 years but that said ND got a stud in Day who's mauling everyone this summer and guess what if he came from a power football state there would be that much more hype for him.

I think this has more to with that they feel good about there chances with Jones and they plan on waiting it out for the chance for Noah Spence who they are recruiting as a DE and not a OLB as some think.

All will be well when Jones' silent verbal becomes solid verbal in the next few days!

At least we can hope.

Damm I leave my computer for a few hours and come back to this! Dammit! WTF??? I really thought we were going to get this kid..., and then we turn him away???? I guess I was under the assumption that we would take 2/3 DL especially the three in question being Day, Schutt and Jones. I am happy as hell to have Day and he will be a good one..., but so will Schutt and Jones. I am still holding hope that we land Jones, but Schutt was a given for us and now we turn him away?!!!! My biggest fear here is that Schutt goes on to be one of the Best DT in the nation. Now that he has UM visit plans that means we might have to play against this guy for four years. Not happy at all with this. This has killed my day for sure. I really hope we at least get our man in Jones but after hearing about this I am having my doubts about him and whether or not we will get him now or if we would turn him away.

My first instinct was to trust in the staff, but the more I think about it, the more it bothers me:

(1) We have space for a LS to join our 5 current specialists, but no room for an elite DT?

(2) By turning Schutt away, he'll end up at Michigan, where we'll have to play against him every year.

(3) DL is arguably the most important unit on the field. Diaco likes to rotate his DL frequently to keep them fresh. Where's all this quality depth that justifies turning Schutt away!?

Agreed. Although I hate to say it because I do trust the staff and think he could contribute down the line, this is where a scholarship to a Bruce Heggie could come back to haunt you.

I can buy that the staff likes Day better, but by all accounts Schutt was right up there with him on our board.

As the guy who's always reminding us to be objective in how we consider recruits, surely you don't believe that. Has "sour grapes" written all over it.

I don't, and I'm sure Shutt was 4-star material. However, things are weird but I'm sure they're weird for a reason. I can't wait for the silverlining!

Good point. However, seems like this would of continued the momentum....just saying.

I just don't understand why we would turn away the only true NT we are recruiting when we won't have much proven depth there when Cwynar graduates. Unless Nix can prove he can play for more than 20 snaps in a game I think we need Schutt.

This may be a good sign for many reasons. We may have other DL in this cycle, but it also shows how it good our depth is already. It is nice to be able to be picky. Couple years ago the staff would have taken him for the sake of taking him.

I don't get it either, guys.

We went buck wild with some "reaches" last year on the defensive line, which is fine, but you have to make room for Schutt. Why we'd have a LS, or even someone like Turner when we really don't "need" them and turn away an elite player at a position of true need is mind boggling.

If he ends up at Michigan.....ugh.

Hate to do it, but I'm gonna go here--

Turning down Schutt is a Ty W-type bonehead move.

Unless...this means we get Day, Jones, AND Spence or something like that.

We may have given too many schollies last year to guys that will have a hard time starting at ND one day. All signs point to us getting Jones, though. All is well. We'll land a stud NT next year. After all, isn't Nix just a soph?

Even still, if it were my ship I'd make room for all FOUR of those guys. I know you can't take 10 D-linemen in a class and there has to be a line, but the fourth best of those guys is still better than some of the DL that are currently on our roster.

I am going to continue to trust this staff. They have pretty consistently shown they know what they are doing. The one fear I have is that hubris could get in the way of sound decision-making.

Well that was a **** load of posts to come back home too.

I bet Mgoblog is having a heyday over this.

Everyone just try to remain calm though. We can't show those UM guys that we're sweating it over this. I hate that we had to turn away Schutt, but instead of crying and freaking out like a bunch of sissies why don't we brag about it instead?

UM fan: "Haha! Your coaches turned away Tommy Scutt!"
Us: "Well that's what happens when your defensive line is just so stacked with talent..."
UM fan: "Right...well..."

Nix has used zero eligibility. He is a redshirt soph.

What is with all this "he might go to michigan" crap. Michigan is one of the great programs in college football history with a brand name that resonates around the country. THEY ARE GOING TO RECRUIT WELL STUPIDS, get over it.

Yeah the Schutt decision is very frustrating, especially considering some offers from the past but it is still August.

Can we please stop saying we wanted Day over Schutt? I for one didn't have a preference. I know we're all expert talent evaluators on here, but I'll defer to the staff's judgement.

It sounds like the wanted Day/Jones over this guy, I'm sure it will make sense in time.

BK knows what he's doing.

I guess BK never really cared for Zorich as a player.

Your mood swings are confusing me.
