Holy crap I can't wait for ND v USF. The Miami game seems like so long ago & I need my ND football fix ASAP.

i will never let a michigan fan live that down...i would have been so embarrased watching that. best part is our stadium had 30,000 less ppl in it then than it does now.

If you get the chance, please include the swinging gate play from either the Central Michigan or the Tulsa game.

I still don't understand how they could penalize a team for the crowd being too loud, or why. Can anyone explain this? This would never happen now. The crowd is SUPPOSED to make so much noise that the visiting offense can't operate. I was a preschooler when this game was played, so I don't remember the explanation that was given, if there was one. Was the world even more strange in the 80's than I remember, or did the referees that called a penalty on ND for having too good of a crowd get run out of America?

No? Nobody who had reached the age of reason by 1988 wants to explain what that situation was all about, or if it was as unbelievable then as it is now? I'm not asking for much.

It was/is(?) considered a Delay of Game penalty as I recall. No matter that it was a pathetic, anaemic, provocative and Debby Downer call. Not to mention cowardly. If an away team's coaches can't come up with a play call that doesn't rely on complicated verbals from the QB, then they aren't playing the game properly, or in some semblance of reality.

Michigan should have stiffened their collective upper lips and quietly run a play that (possibly) gained 23 yards and silenced the crowd – momentarily.

Enthusiasm and noise feed the broadcast beast. As many have pointed out in this forum, there are times when generating crowd noise is "nigh impossible" due to the number of "old farts" in the stands and the overall design of the stadium. I'm pretty damn sure that were the stadium tiered and domed to accentuate the decibels, that particular call on the part of ND-unfriendly refs would be common every game.

While watching that game on TV, I was very, very proud of those lucky enough to be in the stands. It was an "in your face, muthatruckers!" moment for me.

Oh, and should BGIF or others more knowledgeable than I chime in about the rationale behind the call, trust them.

Why wasn't the Harrison Smith interception in the USC game on it?! Best D moment of '10.

Thanks, DShans. The one thing I am really curious about is the sentence I bolded. Is this definitely true? I ask only because I have never heard of the crowd being too good being a penalty. I thought maybe there was a rule at that time that required the crowd to pretend like it wasn't at a football game, and the NCAA later realized their mistake and abolished the rule. I don't think the refs could make that call today. Am I wrong?

BGIF, would definitely be interested to hear your thoughts on the call.
